Product Description
These cuff down socks have a pattern that twists back and forth like a switchback that meanders up a mountain side. The pattern is easy to follow, but might still require some counting. I tried knitting them while watching a hockey game and repeatedly lost count. haha!
This pattern has been fully tech edited.

What Is Being Made
Switchback Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a fitted sock design offered in three sizes. The finished sock features a foot circumference of 7.50 inches (19.10 cm) for Small, 8.50 inches (21.60 cm) for Medium, and 9.50 inches (24.10 cm) for Large, making this pattern suitable for a range of foot sizes.
Craft and Primary Techniques
This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs several advanced sock-knitting techniques to create a well-fitted, durable garment. The pattern utilizes wrap and turn (w&t) techniques, which are essential for creating custom heel shaping and ensuring proper sock fit around the ankle and heel area. Knitters will also work with yarn over (YO) stitches for decorative or structural elements, and knit through the back loop (KTBL) to create twisted stitches that add texture and prevent laddering in certain sections of the sock.
The socks are constructed in the round, as indicated by the gauge measurement provided in rounds per 4 inches. This method allows for seamless construction and creates a more comfortable, form-fitting sock compared to flat knitting.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (P): Used for textural contrast or ribbed sections
- Yarn Over (YO): Creates openwork or decorative increases
- Knit Through the Back Loop (KTBL): Produces twisted stitches for added structure
- Wrap and Turn (w&t): A turning technique used in short-row heel shaping to create a smooth, fitted heel cup
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch pattern, worked in rounds to create a smooth, classic sock fabric
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for Miss Babs Caroline yarn in the colorway Valiant Grapes. This yarn is a premium blend containing 70% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Cashmere, and 10% Nylon/Polyamide, providing softness, warmth, and durability. One skein of 400 yards (120 grams) is required to complete the project.
Needles: US 1 / 2.25 mm needles in your preferred type (circular, double-pointed, or magic loop) are recommended, though you should size up or down as needed to achieve the specified gauge of 30 stitches and 40 rounds per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch.
Additional Tools: A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have completed basic projects and are comfortable with fundamental techniques. The inclusion of wrap-and-turn short-row shaping and the precision required for proper gauge and fit place this beyond beginner level, though experienced knitters will find it accessible.
