Product Description
A sweet nothing to brighten any day. But if you need an excuse, they'd be great in an Easter Basket or as a Valentine.
Fiddly, fast and fun, Sweeties are a great way to use up your worsted scraps (the largest amount needed is for the dress, about 16 yards) and say "I love you enough to immortalize you in yarn" all at the same time. When knit to gauge, they are 5.5" from bald head to bobble toe. The possibilities are limited only by the colors of your scrap yarn.
These little folks are my most complicated pattern to date: in addition to the usual (increases, decreases, i-cord and grafting) you'll need to knit on just a few stitches in the round, be able to seam in adverse conditions and not cry when I ask you to make a bobble (it's OK, I made a video if are confused by the written instructions). As always, I am happy to provide pattern support if you run into trouble. What they lack in Easy-Peasy, they make up for in Cutie-Pie and are all-in-all a quick and interesting knit.
Sweeties Knitted Dolls and Accessories by YarnMiracle
What is Being Made
Sweeties is a downloadable knitting pattern collection for creating charming knitted dolls and coordinating clothing accessories. This intermediate-level project allows crafters to design custom doll collections by mixing and matching different outfit combinations. The pattern supports creating single dolls or multiple dolls that can hold hands together, offering flexibility for personalized doll families or gift sets.
Doll and Garment Options
The Sweeties pattern provides multiple configuration options to suit different creative visions:
- Singleton Sweetie in a Dress: A single doll featuring a knitted body, two bare legs, two arms, and a dress
- Singleton Sweetie in Pants and a Sweater: A single doll with a knitted body, two pants legs, two arms, and a sweater
- Handholding Sweeties Pairs: Two dolls designed to hold hands together, available in three combinations—one doll in pants with one in a dress, both in dresses, or both in pants
- Paper Doll Sweeties: A scalable pattern system allowing crafters to create multiple dolls holding hands in a chain formation, with a mathematical formula provided to calculate yarn and component requirements based on desired doll count and outfit distribution
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
The Sweeties pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. Clothes are knit flat, meaning pieces are worked on straight needles rather than in the round, then seamed on the sides to create finished garments. This construction method allows handholding dolls to be properly assembled and positioned together. The flat-knit approach provides clear shaping opportunities for fitted doll clothing while maintaining structural integrity through strategic seaming.
Stitches and Yarn Weight
The pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and durability for small-scale doll projects. While specific stitch-by-stitch instructions are contained within the full PDF pattern, the worsted weight yarn choice ensures that stitches remain visible and well-defined on the small scale of doll garments. This yarn weight is ideal for creating structured clothing pieces that hold their shape on finished dolls.
Materials and Tools Required
To complete Sweeties projects, crafters will need a set of four double-pointed needles (DPNs) in US size 3, or the appropriate needle size that achieves proper gauge with the selected worsted weight yarn. Double-pointed needles are essential for knitting the small circular components of the doll body and limbs. Crafters should have worsted weight yarn available in colors matching their desired doll and clothing designs, along with basic finishing supplies for seaming garment pieces together.
Difficulty Level and Crafter Suitability
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Sweeties pattern assumes crafters have foundational knitting knowledge including casting on, basic stitches, increasing and decreasing, and seaming techniques. The Paper Doll Sweeties variation includes a mathematical component for calculating materials when creating multiple dolls, which adds a planning element beyond basic knitting skills. This pattern is well-suited for knitters looking to expand beyond simple projects while remaining accessible to those with some prior experience.
