Product Description
Sweet Caroline (ba ba ba!) Good times never seemed so good. Sweet Caroline is a top-down, crescent shaped shawlette using a Shell Lace pattern that melds into a leaf motif. The modified garter-tab-cast-on & shaping of the shawl have been engineered to minimize the "point" that often develops on a top-down crescent shawl. The project requires 2 skeins Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light(420 yds/~105g), or 1 skein Malabrigo Sock (440 yards/100 g), or approx 420 yards fingering weight yarn. **(Please note that you may only require 1 skein of Tosh Merino Light. These skeins are generally ~110 grams each, but occasionally, I have found a skein to be underweight, in which case, a second skein will be required to complete the project. Additionally, if your gauge is looser than the stated blocked gauge, you will require more yarn as well.
Sweet Caroline Shawl by Mary Annarella
What Is Being Made
The Sweet Caroline is a top-down, crescent-shaped shawlette designed by Mary Annarella. This versatile knitted accessory can be worn as a traditional shawl draped across the shoulders to provide warmth, or styled as a delightful scarf wrapped around the neck. The shawlette is an elegant layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Design and Construction
This advanced knitting project begins with a minimal cast on of just 3 stitches. The shawlette grows through strategic increases worked at the edges and within the central stockinette-stitch section, creating the distinctive crescent silhouette. The construction method allows knitters to shape the garment as they work from the top down, providing flexibility in the final dimensions and fit.
Stitch Patterns and Techniques
The Sweet Caroline features a sophisticated blend of lace patterns that evolve throughout the design. The shawlette showcases a shell lace pattern that transitions into a leaf motif, creating visual interest and movement across the finished piece. The design incorporates a central stockinette-stitch portion that provides structural definition and contrast against the delicate lace sections. These stitch patterns work together to create an intricate, textured fabric with both solid and openwork elements.
Yarn and Materials
The Sweet Caroline is designed for fingering weight yarn, requiring approximately 415 yards of yarn total. The pattern provides flexibility with yarn choices, suggesting these specific options:
- 1 skein of Malabrigo Sock (440 yards per 100 grams)
- 2 skeins of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (420 yards per 105 grams each, though only 1 skein may be needed depending on yardage)
- Approximately 415 yards of any fingering weight yarn
The pattern recommends using size 6 needles (or the size needed to achieve proper gauge) for knitting the shawlette.
Gauge and Blocking
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this advanced project. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches when working stockinette stitch after blocking, and 19.5 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches in the lace pattern sections. Blocking is necessary to achieve these measurements and to fully develop the lace pattern definition and the crescent shape of the finished shawlette.
Difficulty Level
The Sweet Caroline is classified as an advanced knitting project. This difficulty rating reflects the complexity of working with lace patterns, managing increases across multiple sections simultaneously, and understanding the top-down construction method. Knitters should be comfortable reading lace charts, maintaining consistent tension in openwork sections, and adjusting their technique for the transition between different stitch patterns.
