Construction and Techniques:

The back piece is cast on using the thumb method, a popular and reliable cast-on technique that produces a neat, stretchy edge well suited to ribbed welts. Stitches are cast on using 3¼ mm needles, and the lower welt is worked in 3x3 rib — a bold, deeply textured ribbing formed by alternating three knit stitches with three purl stitches. This ribbing provides a firm, elasticated edge at the hem. The number of rib rows varies by size, with 9 or 13 rows worked depending on the size being made.

Following the rib, a decrease row is worked on the wrong side to reduce the stitch count before the main body begins. This shaping row uses p2tog (purl two together) decreases evenly spaced across the row, bringing the stitch count down to a tighter working number appropriate for the main fabric. This is a common technique used to ensure the body fabric sits neatly without flaring at the hem.

The needles are then changed to 4 mm needles, and the main body is worked in stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) — the most widely used knitting fabric, formed by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows. This produces a smooth, flat surface on the right side that is ideal for children's knitwear. The back is worked straight in stocking stitch until it reaches the full length for the size being made, ending on a wrong-side row to prepare for shoulder shaping.

Shoulder Shaping: Shoulders are shaped by casting off 12, 13, 14, 15, or 16 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows depending on the size, leaving the remaining stitches for the back neck.

Stitches Used:

  • 3x3 rib – for the lower welt and cuffs
  • Stocking stitch – for the main body and sleeves
  • p2tog – purl two together decrease used in the transition row
  • Cast off – for shoulder and neckline shaping

Needles Required:

  • 3¼ mm needles – for ribbed welts and cuffs
  • 4 mm needles
