Product Description
Sweaters in Sirdar Cotton DK - Knitting Pattern 7501
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern from Sirdar features two distinct sweater designs in Cotton DK yarn: a three-quarter sleeved sweater and a short-sleeved sweater. Both styles are available in multiple sizes ranging from dress size 10 through 20, with bust measurements from 81cm to 107cm (32 to 42 inches). The pattern provides detailed measurements for actual garment fit, full length, and sleeve proportions across all six size options, making it suitable for a wide range of body types.
Techniques and Construction
These sweaters are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The patterns utilize stocking stitch as the primary fabric structure, which creates a smooth, classic appearance ideal for cotton yarn. The garments require working with cable needles and stitch holders, indicating that the designs incorporate cable details or shaping elements that necessitate these specialized tools. The construction method involves knitting flat pieces that are subsequently assembled, as evidenced by the need for stitch holders to manage stitches during the building process.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout both sweater designs is stocking stitch (also known as stockinette stitch), which alternates knit and purl rows to create the characteristic smooth fabric face. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Cable work is incorporated into the design, requiring the use of a cable needle to create twisted stitch patterns that add visual interest and texture to the finished garments.
Materials and Yarn
Both sweater styles are designed for Sirdar Cotton DK yarn, a double knit weight that provides excellent drape and breathability for warm-weather garments. The three-quarter sleeved sweater (shade 511) requires between 4 to 6 balls of 100g yarn depending on size selection, while the short-sleeved version (shade 506) needs 3 to 5 balls of 100g yarn. The pattern notes that the designs are also suitable for alternative DK-weight yarns including Country Style DK, Click DK, Wash 'n' Wear Double Crepe DK, Calico DK, Ella DK, Soukie DK, and Beachcomber DK, though yarn quantities may vary when substituting different fiber types.
Needles and Additional Equipment
Construction requires 4mm (UK size 8 / USA size 6) knitting needles, which are the primary tools for achieving the specified tension and stitch gauge. In addition to the main needles, crafters will need a cable needle for managing cable stitches and stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during garment assembly and shaping. These tools are essential for successfully completing the sweater patterns as designed.
Size Range and Fit
The pattern accommodates six different sizes with specific measurements provided for each. Actual garment measurements range from 84cm to 109cm (33 to 43 inches) around the bust, allowing for appropriate ease and comfortable fit. Full length measurements vary from 58cm to 66cm (22¾ to 26 inches), and three-quarter sleeves measure between 29cm and 31cm (11½ to 12 inches) in length, while short sleeves range from 3cm to 4cm (1¼ to 1½ inches) in depth.
