Hayfield Aran with Wool 7067 – Knitted Sweaters Pattern (Downloadable PDF)

This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Hayfield includes instructions for two classic Aran-weight sweaters: a Round Neck Sweater and a Hooded Sweater. Both designs are worked in Hayfield Aran with Wool, a premium yarn that blends the warmth and durability of wool into a traditional Aran-weight construction. The pattern is sized generously, covering bust/chest measurements from 81/86 cm (32/34 in) up to 132/137 cm (52/54 in), making it an inclusive choice for a wide range of knitters.

About the Two Designs

Round Neck Sweater

The Round Neck Sweater is a timeless, structured garment featuring the intricate cable and textured stitch panels that are the hallmark of traditional Aran knitting. The finished actual measurements range from 93 cm (36¾ in) to 142 cm (56 in) across the chest, with a full length of 60 cm to 73 cm depending on size. The sleeve length is listed as adjustable, ranging from 46 cm to 51 cm, giving knitters flexibility to tailor the fit to their own arm length. This sweater is worked in Hayfield Aran with Wool shade 929, requiring between 5 and 8 x 100g balls depending on the size chosen.

Hooded Sweater

The Hooded Sweater offers a more contemporary, casual silhouette while retaining the same rich Aran cable detailing as the round neck version. The addition of a hood makes this design particularly practical and on-trend, suitable for both adults and older teens. It is worked in Hayfield Aran with Wool shade 994 and requires slightly more yarn than the round neck version — between 5 and 9 x 100g balls — reflecting the additional fabric needed for the hood construction. Actual measurements and sleeve lengths mirror those of the round neck sweater across all sizes.

Stitches and Techniques Used

Both sweaters make extensive use of the classic Aran knitting tradition, combining multiple stitch types to create rich, textured fabric panels. Aran knitting originates from the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland and is celebrated for its deeply sculpted, interlocking cable and moss stitch designs, each of which traditionally carried symbolic meaning. The techniques and stitches used in this pattern include:

  • Stocking stitch – the foundational knit-on-right-side, purl-on-wrong-side fabric used in the body sections between cable panels
  • Cable stitches – specifically C6B (a six-stitch back cable worked by slipping 3 stitches to a cable needle held at the back, knitting 3, then knitting 3 from the cable needle), which creates the classic rope cable twist
  • T2F (Twist 2 Front) – slipping one stitch to a cable needle held at the front, purling 1, then knitting 1 from the cable needle, used to create diagonal movement in the cable panel
  • T2B (Twist 2 Back) – slipping one stitch to a cable needle held at the back, knitting 1, then purling 1 from the cable needle, the mirror action to T2F
  • Knit and purl combinations – used to build the textured background and moss or seed stitch elements within the cable panel
  • Decreasing and increasing – for shaping the armholes, neckline, and hood
  • Ribbing – typically used at the cuffs, hem, and neckband for elasticity and a neat finish
  • Stitch holder techniques – stitches are placed on holders for later finishing of necklines and hoods

The cable panel of 69 stitches is a central feature of both garments and measures 31 cm (12 in) in width. This panel is a complex arrangement of travelling stitches and cables, as indicated by the detailed stitch sequence in the pattern, which includes repeated motifs of T2F, T2B, C6

Really good experience, expertise at hand to clarify detailed

Pattern is for this wool so any inconsistencies will be my knitting. Wool just a tad flatter in colour than I’d hoped . Good pattern, very clear instructions. Has raglan sleeves so should make up well and stay relatively smart.

Lovely patterns

My husband wanted an Aran jumper as he wore his original one I knitted him years ago to death. This pattern was very easy to follow and it has taken me less than 3 weeks to make. I love the ability to download the patterns as then I can start my projects straight away. I have not ordered any wool from love knitting as I have a lovely wool shop down the road and find it easier to see the colours in person.
