Product Description
Sweater, Tank Top and Hat in Stylecraft Bambino Prints DK – Pattern 10063
This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Stylecraft offers three coordinating designs for babies and young children: a sweater, a tank top, and a hat, all worked in Stylecraft Bambino Prints DK yarn. Sized to fit ages birth through 5 years, the pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty and makes a charming, practical set suitable for gifting or everyday wear.
Yarn, Needles and Materials
All three designs are worked in Stylecraft Bambino Prints DK, a DK weight yarn. The pattern calls for 3.25mm needles for ribbed welts and borders and 4mm needles for the main fabric sections. No crochet hook is required, as this is a knitting-only pattern.
Sizing Overview
The pattern covers five sizes across all three garments:
- 0–6 months: to fit 41 cm (16 in) chest; sweater full length 24 cm (9½ in); sleeve length 15 cm (6 in)
- 6–12 months: to fit 46 cm (18 in) chest; sweater full length 28 cm (11 in); sleeve length 17 cm (6½ in)
- 12–24 months: to fit 51 cm (20 in) chest; sweater full length 32 cm (12¾ in); sleeve length 20 cm (8 in)
- 2–3 years: to fit 56 cm (22 in) chest; sweater full length 38 cm (15 in); sleeve length 24 cm (9½ in)
- 4–5 years: to fit 61 cm (24 in) chest; sweater full length 42 cm (16¾ in); sleeve length 29 cm (11½ in)
Actual measurements are given with positive ease built in, ranging from 46 cm (18½ in) to 66 cm (26½ in) across the chest. The tank top has a shorter body length, beginning at 22 cm for the smallest size and increasing through the range.
Design 1: The Sweater
Construction and Shaping
The sweater is worked in separate pieces — back, front, and sleeves — and seamed. The back begins at the lower edge with a k1, p1 rib welt worked on 3.25mm needles, cast on with an odd-stitch count (for example, 59 sts for the smallest size, scaling up to 85 sts for the largest). The rib continues for approximately 2.5–3 cm, ending on a right-side row. An increase row is then worked on the wrong side using M1 (make one) increases spaced evenly across the row to bring the stitch count up to the full working width — for instance, 74 sts for the smallest size and 106 sts for the largest.
Main Body Stitch Pattern
After the welt, stitches are transferred to 4mm needles for the main body. The fabric features a textured stitch pattern incorporating knit and purl combinations that create a decorative panel effect. The right-side rows are structured around repeating sequences such as k9, *p2, k4, p2, k8, which produce raised columns and recessed channels across the fabric. This type of pattern adds visual interest and a degree of structure to what would otherwise be a plain stocking stitch fabric, making it well suited to a variegated or printed yarn like Bambino Prints DK where the colour changes themselves provide additional decoration.
Techniques Used in the Sweater
- Cast on using a standard method for the back, front, and sleeves
- K1, P1 rib for welts and cuffs on 3.25mm needles
- M1 increase worked on the wrong side to transition from rib to body stitch count
- Textured knit/
