Sweater and Waistcoat Knitting Pattern – King Cole Big Value Super Chunky (Pattern 4362)

This King Cole pattern 4362 is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern offering two classic knitwear designs: a sweater and a waistcoat, both worked in King Cole Big Value Super Chunky yarn. The pattern is rated as intermediate in difficulty and is sized to fit a wide range of chest measurements, from 71/76 cm (28/30 in) up to 112/117 cm (44/46 in), making it a versatile choice for knitters looking to create wardrobe staples in a range of adult sizes. As with all King Cole patterns, a donation is made to the Pink Ribbon Foundation with every purchase.

About the Designs

The Sweater

The sweater is a structured, cosy pullover featuring a textured stitch pattern across both the front and back panels. It is designed with set-in or shaped armholes and includes a neat neckband worked after the shoulder seams are joined. The construction follows a classic flat-knitting approach, working the front and back separately before seaming, with stitches picked up around the neckline to finish the garment cleanly.

The sweater front begins with a textured rib-based pattern incorporating knit and purl combinations, creating visual interest across the body. The pattern specifies shaping at the armhole and neck, with stitches placed on a stitch holder at the front neck and later incorporated into the neckband. The neckband itself is worked on 8mm needles, picking up stitches evenly along both sides of the neck and across the held stitches, then cast off in pattern for a tidy, professional finish.

The Waistcoat

The second design in this pattern is a waistcoat (sleeveless vest), worked in the same King Cole Big Value Super Chunky yarn. As a sleeveless garment, it offers a quicker knit and a versatile layering piece that can be worn over shirts or lighter knitwear. Like the sweater, it is constructed using flat knitting with shaping at the armholes and neckline.

Stitches and Techniques Used

Key Stitches

  • 1x1 Rib: Used for welts, cuffs, and neckbands. Worked by alternating knit and purl stitches across each row, creating an elastic, stretchy fabric ideal for edges that need to hug the body.
  • Textured Pattern: The main body fabric combines knit and purl stitches in a structured repeat — for example, K4, P1 repeats — creating a ribbed or panelled texture with visual depth across the garment body.
  • Cable Stitch (C4B): A four-stitch back cable is included as a special abbreviation. This technique involves slipping two stitches onto a cable needle (CN) and holding them at the back of the work, knitting the next two stitches, then knitting the two stitches from the cable needle. This creates the classic twisted rope effect associated with traditional Aran and chunky knitwear.
  • M1 (Make One): An increase technique used for shaping, worked by picking up the horizontal loop between the last and next stitch and knitting into the back of it to avoid a hole — a neat, almost invisible increase.

Construction Techniques

  • Flat knitting on straight needles, working pieces separately and seaming together
  • Armhole shaping with decreases worked on right-side rows and every following alternate row
  • Neck shaping with stitches placed on a stitch holder for later pickup
  • Neckband pickup worked with right side facing, picking up stitches evenly along both sides of the neck and across held stitches
  • Shoulder seaming before neckband construction
  • Use of a cable needle for the C4B cable stitch
  • Use of a stitch holder for front neck stitches
