Product Description
Supporting Sweater in Viking Garn Bamboo – UK-2322-7 Knitting Pattern (Downloadable PDF)
The Supporting Sweater, design number UK-2322-7 by designer Turid Stapnes, is a classic Fair Isle-style pullover sweater published by Viking of Norway under their Bamboo yarn range. This intermediate-level knitting pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and produces a beautifully structured, lightweight sweater featuring colourwork patterning across the body and sleeves. The design is worked in the round using a traditional steek construction, making it an excellent project for knitters ready to develop their colourwork and steek-cutting skills.
Garment Overview
The Supporting Sweater is a fitted pullover worked in the round from the bottom up. It features a shaped neckline with a front V-neck or curved neckline opening created via a centre-front steek, set-in or drop sleeves worked in the round with their own steeks at the armholes, and a neat neckband picked up and worked in the round after finishing. The sweater has a clean, structured silhouette suitable for a wide range of sizes.

Yarn and Materials
This pattern is specifically designed for Viking Bamboo yarn, a lightweight 6-ply blend of 50% bamboo and 50% cotton, sold in 50 g skeins. The bamboo-cotton composition gives the finished sweater a soft drape, a subtle sheen, and excellent breathability, making it ideal for transitional seasons. Two colours are used throughout the design:
- White no. 600: 9 – 9 – 10 – 11 – 11 – 12 skeins (depending on size)
- Walnut no. 610: 4 – 5 – 5 – 6 – 6 – 7 skeins (depending on size)
The contrast between the crisp White no. 600 and the warm, earthy Walnut no. 610 creates a striking two-colour colourwork effect that is both timeless and versatile.
Recommended Needles
- Main needle size: 3.5 mm (for body and sleeves)
- Smaller needle size: 2.5 mm (for ribbing, neckband, and finishing details)
Circular needles are required for working in the round. The pattern also references a smallest needle size for specific finishing steps.
Tension
Achieving the correct tension is emphasised in the pattern as essential for a successful result. The stated tension is 22 stitches in stocking stitch on 3.5 mm needles measures 10 cm (4 in) in width. Knitters are strongly advised to work a tension swatch before beginning.
Techniques and Construction
The Supporting Sweater uses a number of traditional Scandinavian knitting techniques that make it particularly rewarding for intermediate knitters looking to expand their skills:
Steek Construction
The sweater is worked entirely in the round, including the armholes and the centre-front neckline opening, using steeks — extra stitches added to allow the knitting to be cut open after
