Super Soakers Baby Bloomers – Free Knitting Pattern by Sarah Smuland for Spud & Chloë

Super Soakers is a free, beginner-friendly knitting pattern designed by Sarah Smuland and published by Spud & Chloë, the beloved yarn brand known for its sweet, playful aesthetic and family-friendly designs. This charming pattern creates a pair of baby bloomers — sometimes called soaker pants — sized for 6–9 months. With their gathered waist, decorative eyelet row, and functional drawstring, these little bloomers are as practical as they are adorable, making them a perfect quick knit for new parents, grandparents, or anyone looking to gift a handmade treasure for a baby.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a pair of baby bloomers with a waistband featuring an eyelet drawstring channel. The construction is simple and intuitive: the fabric is worked flat on straight needles, beginning with just 3 cast-on stitches and gradually increasing to form the triangular body of each panel. The waist section is finished with a ribbed band and a row of yarn-over eyelets through which a crocheted drawstring is threaded. Leg openings are created during the finishing stage by seaming strategically, leaving gaps at each side. The result is a soft, stretchy, pull-on style bloomer perfectly suited to a wriggling baby.

Techniques Used

  • Garter stitch shaping: The main body is built using a simple knit-front-and-back (kfb) increase worked every row, creating a gradual triangular shape from a 3-stitch cast-on up to 95 stitches. This makes the pattern extremely accessible for beginners.
  • Seed stitch ribbing: The waistband is worked in a K1, P1 alternating pattern, creating a textured, slightly elastic band that frames the top of the bloomers neatly.
  • Eyelet row: A decorative and functional row of yarn-over, K2tog combinations creates evenly spaced eyelets through which the drawstring is later threaded. This is a classic lace technique simplified to a single row, making it very approachable for knitters new to working with yarn overs.
  • Seaming: Finishing involves seaming the vertical waist section first, then seaming down each side for approximately 2 inches while leaving the leg openings unseamed. This straightforward seaming technique shapes the bloomers without any complex construction.
  • Crochet drawstring: Using a Size H (5mm) crochet hook and yarn held double, a chain of 125 stitches is worked to create a sturdy, stretchy drawstring that is then threaded through the eyelet row at the waist.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) – the foundation stitch used throughout the body in garter stitch
  • Purl (P) – used in the waistband ribbing rows
  • Knit front and back (Kfb) – the increase stitch used to build the triangular body shape row by row
  • Yarn over (YO) – creates the eyelet holes in the drawstring channel row
  • Knit 2 together (K2tog) – paired with the yarn over to maintain stitch count while forming eyelets
  • Crochet chain stitch – worked separately to create the drawstring

Materials

  • Yarn: Spud & Chloë Sweater in colorway Ice Cream #7500 — 1 hank (100g / 160 yards). Spud & Chloë Sweater is a well-regarded yarn known for its durability and washability, making it a practical choice for baby garments.
  • Needles: Size 5 (3.75mm) straight needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Croc
