Product Description
From the Vivacious Vest Collection by Annabelle Drumm. A double layer vest or top using fingering weight yarn, one layer is knit bottom up with a decorative hem, racer back and halter neck; the other layer is knit top-down with raglan short sleeves. Layers are joined at the underarm and neck.
This top is suited to many body shapes including lollipop, column, pear and apple silhouettes. You could even do a maternity version. It’s an ideal way to feature a couple of skeins of hand dyed or hand painted yarn with a less expensive option as the outer layer. The layers look lightweight yet, added together they are deceptively warm. There is only one basic chart for the hem accompanied by full written instructions. The pattern has been professionally tech edited to give you assurance of a more accurate pattern.
This is a fun, unique style which is super comfortable and easy to wear. Check inside the pattern for links to recommended Lovecrafts yarn for this project.
Sunny Halter Vest by Annabelle Drumm
What is Being Made
The Sunny Halter is a double-layer slipover vest from the Vivacious Vests Collection, designed by Annabelle Drumm. This innovative garment features two distinct knitted layers that are strategically joined at the underarm and neck, creating a sophisticated and versatile layering piece. The vest is engineered to flatter multiple body shapes, including lollipop, column, pear, and apple silhouettes, and can even be adapted for maternity wear. The halter neckline serves as a focal point, making this vest an excellent choice for showcasing hand-dyed or hand-painted yarns while using a more economical yarn option for the outer layer.
Construction and Techniques
The Sunny Halter employs a unique two-layer construction method that combines different knitting directions. The inner layer is knit from the bottom up and features a decorative hem and distinctive halter neck styling. The outer layer is knit top-down with raglan short sleeves, allowing for seamless integration of sleeve shaping. The two layers are then joined together at the underarm and neck areas, creating a cohesive garment. This construction approach provides design flexibility, allowing knitters to use contrasting colors strategically—for example, using a darker shade across the shoulders to draw visual attention to the halter neckline. The vest is designed as a slipover style, eliminating the need for closures.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the pattern overview, the design incorporates decorative hemming techniques on the inner layer and raglan shaping on the outer layer. The halter neck construction requires specialized shaping to create the distinctive neckline silhouette that defines this vest.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Sunny Halter is designed using fingering weight yarn, which is a fine gauge that creates delicate, detailed fabric. The pattern recommends knitting the vest in wool blend yarns, specifically wool combined with cotton, linen, or hemp fibers. These blended compositions offer practical advantages: they provide warmth and structure from the wool component while adding breathability and comfort from the plant-based fibers. The double-layer construction, while appearing lightweight, creates deceptive warmth, particularly across the chest area, making it suitable for layering over long-sleeved t-shirts or blouses with transparent or floaty sleeves. The wool blend option allows the vest to be worn on its own as a standalone garment.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, reflecting the complexity of managing two separate layers, coordinating different knitting directions, and executing the precise joining techniques required at the underarm and neck.
Pattern Format
The Sunny Halter is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing knitters to access the complete instructions digitally and work at their own pace.
