Product Description
The Sunny Beret is worked seamlessly in the round starting with the twisted rib stitch brim. It is easy to customize the final look by completing fewer or more pattern repeats to adjust the height of the hat making it less or more slouchy. In children’s sizes the beret has a shallower and more fitted style.
This beret is designed to be knit in two colours to accentuate the textural rib stitch stitch pattern. The pattern instructions for the two-colour version is provided. As shown in the cover samples, this beret can be knit in one colour, or even in a self-striping yarn.

Sunny Beret by Alla Saenko
What is Being Made
The Sunny Beret is a seamlessly constructed knit hat designed by Alla Saenko from Island Knit Design. This versatile beret pattern is available in five sizes ranging from XXS to L, with head circumferences from 18.5 to 23.25 inches (47 to 59 cm), making it suitable for both children and adults. The design offers customizable styling options, allowing knitters to adjust the slouch and height of the finished hat by completing fewer or more pattern repeats.
Construction Technique
The Sunny Beret is worked seamlessly in the round, beginning with a twisted rib stitch brim at the base. This construction method eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous, polished garment. The pattern is specifically engineered to allow for easy customization of the final silhouette—knitters can create a more fitted, shallow style or a more slouchy, relaxed fit simply by adjusting the number of pattern repeats worked in the body of the hat. Children's sizes feature a shallower, more fitted construction compared to adult sizes.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in the Sunny Beret is twisted rib stitch, which forms the textural foundation of the design. This stitch pattern is emphasized through the two-colour knitting technique, creating visual depth and interest in the finished hat.
Colour and Design Options
The Sunny Beret is designed to showcase its textural qualities through colour work. The pattern includes two-colour knitting instructions, allowing knitters to accentuate the rib stitch pattern by working with contrasting yarns. However, the design is versatile enough to be knitted in a single solid colour or using self-striping yarn, offering multiple aesthetic possibilities depending on yarn choice and personal preference.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern is designed for 3-ply yarn weight, which provides an ideal balance of drape and structure for a beret. Knitters will need appropriate needles sized for their chosen yarn weight to achieve the correct gauge and finished dimensions specified in the pattern.
Skill Level
The Sunny Beret is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with techniques such as seamless in-the-round construction and two-colour knitting methods.
