Product Description
I created this sunflower for a local knitting project. It is made using Dk yarn and 3.25mm needles. It only uses knit stitches and the petals are made using short row shaping. There are 3 options for the centre which vary from fiddly but very little sewing up to not at all fiddly but lots more sewing up.
Sunflower Knitting Pattern by Helen Auld
What Is Being Made
This is a decorative knitted sunflower design created by independent designer Helen Auld. The finished piece measures approximately 18cm (7 inches) across, making it suitable for use as a standalone decoration or embellishment. The pattern produces a dimensional floral motif with distinct petals and a textured center.
Craft and Technique Overview
The Sunflower is a knitting pattern rated at intermediate difficulty level. The design employs several advanced knitting techniques to create its three-dimensional structure and realistic petal formation.
Construction Techniques
The sunflower is constructed using a distinctive modular approach:
- Sideways petal knitting: Individual petals are knitted horizontally rather than from top to bottom, allowing for greater control over shaping
- Short row shaping: This technique creates the curved, organic form of each petal by working partial rows that add depth and dimension
- Strategic casting on and off: Stitches are cast on and bound off at specific points during petal construction to achieve the desired silhouette
- Petal strip assembly: Completed petals are joined together in strips to form the flower's layered structure
- Stitch pickup for the center: The sunflower's middle is created by picking up stitches from the row ends of the petal strips, with simplified options provided for knitters preferring to skip this step or work it differently
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques:
- Knit (K): The primary stitch creating the fabric base in stocking stitch
- Knit 2 together (K2tog): A decrease stitch used to reduce stitch count and shape the petals
- Slip stitch (sl1): Used to transfer stitches between needles, often employed at edges for a neater finish
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for double knit (DK) weight yarn. The example shown was created using King Cole Pricewise DK, though any DK weight yarn will work for this project. Knitters will need 3.25mm straight needles, a yarn needle for finishing, and scissors. The recommended tension is 26 stitches and 30 rows over a 10cm x 10cm square worked in stocking stitch, though the pattern notes that tension is not critical for achieving good results.
Pattern Features and Accessibility
This free downloadable PDF pattern is designed with flexibility in mind. Detailed abbreviations and row-by-row instructions are provided, with stitch counts given in brackets when they change within a row. Instructions are comma-separated for clarity. The pattern includes multiple options for the center stitch pickup technique, allowing knitters to choose a method that suits their skill level or preference, making it accessible despite its intermediate rating.
