Product Description
Here is the crochet pattern for my Sun Halos Crochet Square / Blanket.
Inspired by the rainbow halos you sometimes see around the sun. Bright rainbow colours used in alternating orders bring this pattern to life. However, using just two contrasting colours can also make your squares pop! I have used Stylecraft Special DK yarn for my samples and a 4mm hook but this pattern would work with any thickness of yarn and corresponding hook size.
Yarn requirements are dependent on how many squares you wish to make. Using rainbow colours makes this a great stash busting blanket!
Make the blanket or just the squares to add to another make. The possibilities are endless. Each square measures approximately 5" by 5" (12.5cm)
This pattern has been tested by some wonderful testers prior to publishing and comes in UK and US terms - English only.
Sun Halos Square Blanket
What is Being Made
The Sun Halos Square Blanket is a colorful crochet blanket designed by Helen McLean of Sew Sew Baby. This project creates a finished blanket using a modular square construction technique, allowing crafters to build a larger throw or blanket piece through interconnected rounds of colorful crochet work.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a crochet project worked with a 4mm crochet hook. The blanket is constructed using the fundamental crochet method of working in continuous rounds, with each round joined using a slip stitch to create a cohesive square shape. The pattern uses UK crochet terminology throughout, making it essential for crocheters to be familiar with British stitch abbreviations and definitions.
Stitches Used
The Sun Halos Square Blanket incorporates a variety of crochet stitches to create texture and visual interest:
- Chain (ch) – The foundation stitch used to begin rounds and create stitch spaces
- Double Crochet (dc) – A fundamental short stitch used throughout the pattern
- Treble Crochet (tr) – A taller stitch that adds height and openness to the design
- Double Treble Crochet (dtr) – An even taller stitch featured in Round 5, requiring specific placement into skipped stitches from earlier rounds
- Puff Stitch (PS) – A special decorative stitch created by working multiple yarn overs and loops on the hook simultaneously, then pulling through all loops at once to create a textured, dimensional effect
- Stitch Space (st sp) – Gaps created between stitches that allow for open, lacy sections within the blanket
Materials
The Sun Halos Square Blanket pattern calls for Stylecraft Special DK weight yarn in seven vibrant colorways: Boysenberry, Cornflower, Meadow, Saffron, Spice, Lipstick, and Cream. The DK (Double Knitting) weight yarn is a medium weight that works well with the 4mm hook specified in the pattern, creating a fabric with good drape and definition. The multi-color palette allows crafters to create a striking, rainbow-inspired blanket with excellent color contrast and visual impact.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The inclusion of special stitches like the Puff Stitch and the requirement to work Double Treble Crochet into specific skipped stitches from previous rounds demonstrates intermediate-level construction skills and pattern-reading ability.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized using standard crochet notation conventions: repeats are clearly marked between asterisks (*), and stitch counts are provided at the end of each round in brackets to help crafters verify their progress. The instruction to count Ch3/2/1 as a stitch throughout (unless otherwise noted) is a common UK terminology convention that affects how stitch counts are calculated when beginning new rounds.
