Product Description
Summerblossom is a bonus pattern for the Leaf Cycle Collection in celebration of the leafy KAL being held in the Nimble Knits group throughout the month of May 2015.
It is a variation on Summerleaf with the edging adapted from Blossomleaf. It uses the same leaf pattern and crescent shape, but this time with a lighter, more open edging.
When knit in lace weight or cotton, it is ideal for keeping the hot summer sun off delicate shoulders, but it works equally well to keep you warm in the cooler months if knit in a heavier weight.
Both the leaves and the edging can be extended to any size.
It is adaptable to any yardage of lace to sport weight, and can use lots of beads or none at all.
Pattern rows on the right side only.
Can be worked solely from the written pattern or from the charts.
Summerblossom Knitted Shawl by Nim Teasdale
What is Being Made
Summerblossom is a knitted shawl design created by independent designer Nim Teasdale. This shawl features an elegant progression of motifs inspired by seasonal transitions, moving from broad summer leaves into delicate blossoms. The design is an offshoot of the Summerleaf pattern, offering knitters a versatile project that celebrates the warmth and beauty of golden sun, long days, and peaceful shade.
Sizing and Adaptability
The Summerblossom shawl is designed with adaptable sizing, allowing knitters to customize the finished dimensions based on available yardage. The pictured shawl measures 38 x 210cm (15 x 80 inches) after blocking and uses 400 meters (435 yards) of yarn. Knitters can extend the optional plain area to any desired size, and both the broadleaf lace sections and the small blossom edging can be continued until yarn is exhausted, making this pattern flexible for various yardage amounts.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Lace knitting: The design incorporates lace techniques throughout, with the lighter edging of Blossomleaf transitioning from broader shade leaves into the delicate blossom sections
- Beading: Beads are incorporated into the leaf beading, with additional beads that can be scattered randomly throughout the edging at the knitter's discretion
- Gauge-appropriate construction: The pattern accommodates different yarn weights by adjusting needle size and gauge accordingly
Stitches and Pattern Structure
The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches including knit (K) and purl (P) stitches as the foundation. All right-side rows begin and end with a consistent stitch pattern: K2, KYOK (knit yarn over knit), maintaining symmetry throughout. All wrong-side rows follow their own established pattern. The lace motifs create the leaf and blossom shapes through strategic yarn overs and decreases typical of lace knitting construction.
Yarn and Materials
The Summerblossom shawl accommodates multiple yarn weights, including 3-ply, 4-ply, and lace weight yarns. The pictured example was knitted using Ozifarmer Silky Merino Lace yarn on 4mm (US size 6) needles. Beads should be sized appropriately to suit the chosen yarn weight, ensuring they sit properly within the lace structure without distorting the fabric.
Difficulty Level
Summerblossom is rated as a beginner level knitting project, making it accessible to knitters new to shawl construction and lace techniques. The straightforward stitch patterns and clear row structure allow beginners to develop their skills while creating a beautiful, wearable finished object.
Design Features
The shawl's design philosophy emphasizes seasonal beauty through its motif progression. The transition from broad summer leaves to delicate blossoms creates visual interest and captures the essence of warm weather. Optional beading elements add sparkle and dimension, with knitters having the freedom to place additional beads randomly throughout the edging for personalized embellishment. This flexibility allows each finished shawl to be unique while maintaining the core design aesthetic.
