Summer Rain Shawl by Julia Decker
Project Overview
The Summer Rain Shawl is a lightweight, airy crescent-shaped shawl designed by Julia Decker of Deunyc Knits Designs. Inspired by the gentle summer rains of Colorado, this advanced-level knitting project features an original cable and lace pattern that evokes the fall and splash of raindrops. The shawl is worked from the center top-down in a classic crescent silhouette, offering two finished size options to suit different preferences.
Finished Dimensions
- Small Size: 60 inches (152 cm) wingspan with 18 inches (46 cm) center depth measured to the lace border tips
- Large Size: 75 inches (190 cm) wingspan with 22 inches (56 cm) center depth measured to the lace border tips
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced knitting project employs multiple stitch techniques to create visual interest and texture. The shawl begins with twisted rib stitch at the center top, which transitions into an original cable and lace pattern that forms the primary design element. The combination of cables and lace creates the impression of falling raindrops and water splashing, while the lightweight construction ensures the finished piece remains airy and wearable during warmer months.
Yarn and Materials
The Summer Rain Shawl is designed to work with 3-ply, 4-ply, and lace weight yarns, allowing knitters flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended drape and delicate appearance. The pattern requires standard knitting needles appropriate to the chosen yarn weight, along with scissors for finishing.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with cable stitches, lace work, and top-down construction techniques.
