Summer Blossom Top by Cheryl Andrews

Project Overview

The Summer Blossom Top is a charming knitted garment designed for infants, created by independent designer Cheryl Andrews. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a delightful summer top featuring a stretchy ribbed bodice that transitions into a graceful lacy leaf ruffle. The design includes practical shoulder buttons for easy dressing, making it an ideal project for parents seeking functional yet decorative baby clothing. The pattern is available in four sizes ranging from 3 months to 24 months, with finished chest measurements of 18, 20, 21.5, and 23 inches respectively.

Construction Techniques

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several sophisticated techniques that add visual interest and functionality to the finished garment. The bodice features a twisted rib construction that provides stretch and comfort for active babies. A key design element is the integrated I-cord edging worked directly into the knitting of the bodice at the armholes and neckline, eliminating the need for separate attachment work. The bodice then gently flares into a lacy leaf ruffle, creating an elegant transition from the fitted upper portion to the flowing lower edge. The pattern also incorporates a decorative knitted flower element called the Summer Blossom, which is positioned at the waist as an ornamental accent.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

  • Twisted rib: Creates the stretchy, textured bodice that provides comfortable fit and ease of movement
  • Lace stitches: Used in the leaf ruffle section to create an airy, delicate appearance
  • I-cord: Integrated edging technique applied to armholes and neckline for a polished, professional finish
  • Provisional cast-on: Employed using waste yarn to allow for seamless construction and stitch holder functionality

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Summer Blossom Top is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, offering excellent stitch definition and durability for baby garments. The main bodice and ruffle require approximately 175 to 215 yards depending on size, with suggested yarn options including Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece, Cascade Sierra, Hobby Lobby I Love this Cotton, or Jil Eaton Cottontail. These recommendations emphasize natural fiber content and breathability, ideal for summer wear. The decorative flower accent at the waist is created using fingering weight yarn in two contrasting colors, requiring only small amounts of yardage. The pattern calls for waste yarn of the same or lighter weight to be used for the provisional cast-on and as a stitch holder during construction.

Needles and Tools

  • Size 8 circular needle: 16 to 29 inches, used for the main bodice and top construction
  • Size 6 circular needle: Specified for additional shaping or edging work
  • Waste yarn: Serves dual purposes as provisional cast-on material and stitch holder

Garment Sizing and Fit

The pattern provides four graduated sizes to accommodate babies from 3 months through 24 months of age. Finished chest measurements when the ribbing is stretched range from 18 inches for the smallest size to 23 inches for the largest. The garment length, measured from the top of the shoulder to the bottom of the ruffle, ranges from 9.5 inches to 11 inches across the size range. The stretchy ribbed bodice ensures a comfortable, forgiving fit that accommodates growth and movement, while the shoulder button closures facilitate easy dressing.
