Product Description
2020 has been a strange old year: with a pandemic shutting all of us up in our homes, one thing I really missed was coffee-shop knitting. The Sugar Cube Cowl is a homage to this activity, featuring a simple textured stitch pattern, made up of knits and purls, that looks like stacked sugar cubes.
As summer turns to autumn I find myself wanting a lightweight additional layer: cowls are my favourite solution. The SugarCube cowl is knitted in DK weight yarn and can be made either short or long (to be wrapped round the neck twice) to add a little extra warmth without resorting to a coat. The stitch pattern is fully reversible, so the inside of thecowl is as attractive as the outside.
The cowl is worked in the round from the bottom up, starting with a small section of ribbing, then the large, textured pattern section is knitted. The cowl is finished with a final ribbed section.
Sugar Cube Cowl by Vikki Bird
What is Being Made
The Sugar Cube Cowl is a lightweight neck accessory designed to provide an extra layer of warmth during transitional seasons. This cowl can be knitted in two lengths: a shorter version for single wrapping around the neck, or a longer version that wraps around the neck twice for additional coverage and warmth without the bulk of a traditional coat. The design is ideal for adding comfort during autumn and cooler weather while maintaining a refined, versatile aesthetic.
Design Inspiration and Features
Created by designer Vikki Bird in 2020, the Sugar Cube Cowl draws inspiration from coffee-shop knitting culture and the simple pleasures of portable crafting. The cowl features a distinctive textured stitch pattern that visually resembles stacked sugar cubes, created through a combination of knit and purl stitches arranged in a repeating sequence. One of the standout features of this design is that the stitch pattern is fully reversible, meaning both the inside and outside of the finished cowl are equally attractive and well-finished.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Sugar Cube Cowl employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners, making it an accessible project for those new to the craft. The construction method involves working in the round from the bottom up, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional-looking finished garment.
- Ribbing: The cowl begins with a small section of ribbing at the base, which provides structure and helps the cowl maintain its shape around the neck
- Textured Stitch Pattern: The main body features a reversible pattern composed of knit and purl stitches arranged to create the signature sugar cube texture
- Circular Knitting: The entire project is worked in the round, eliminating seams and creating a seamless construction
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Sugar Cube Cowl is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a versatile medium-weight yarn that provides enough substance for structure while remaining lightweight enough for layering. The sample shown in the pattern features a beautiful tonal brown DK yarn specially dyed by Blue Fern Yarns, selected to evoke the warm, rich tones of brown sugar. This yarn is a merino and bamboo blend, a combination that offers several practical advantages: the merino provides warmth and elasticity, while the bamboo contributes a subtle sheen and helps the textured stitches visually pop, making the sugar cube pattern particularly prominent and visually striking.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner-friendly project, the Sugar Cube Cowl is an excellent choice for knitters who are new to the craft or those seeking a straightforward, confidence-building pattern. The simple combination of knit and purl stitches, combined with the straightforward construction method of working in the round, makes this an ideal project for developing fundamental knitting skills.
