Strofi Headband by Teti's Knit Garden
What is Being Made
The Strofi headband is a knitted accessory designed to fit adult head circumferences of 54-57 cm (21-23 inches). This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished headband with a width of 12 cm (4.7 inches). The pattern is fully customizable, allowing knitters to adjust the length to accommodate different head sizes beyond the standard adult measurement.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture. The primary technique featured is cable knitting, which involves manipulating stitches using a spare needle to create twisted, rope-like patterns across the fabric. The cable work is strategically placed within the design, with specific cable crossing instructions provided in the pattern rows. The headband is worked in the round using a provisional cast-on method with a crochet chain, which allows for a seamless, professional finish. Knitters will need to understand how to work flat sections and join them into a circular construction, as well as manage stitch markers to track pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds.
Stitches Used
The Strofi headband utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with cable techniques:
- Knit stitch (k) – the basic stitch forming the primary fabric
- Purl stitch (p) – used to create textured ribbing and pattern definition
- Cable stitches – created by crossing groups of stitches over one another using a spare needle, producing the characteristic twisted effect
- Ribbing (p2, k2) – a stretchy, elastic stitch pattern that provides structure and helps the headband conform to the wearer's head
The pattern repeats these stitches across multiple rows, with cable crossings occurring at regular intervals to build the overall design.
Materials Required
Approximately 75 grams of Drops Nepal yarn or any similar aran weight yarn is needed to complete an adult-sized headband. Aran weight yarn is a medium-heavy yarn that works well for this project, providing good stitch definition for the cable work and creating a fabric with appropriate drape and warmth. Knitters will need 5 mm (US size 8) needles – either five double-pointed needles or two pairs of circular needles measuring 40 cm (16 inches) in length. Additional supplies include a stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds and a crochet hook for the provisional cast-on technique. The gauge for this pattern is 15 stitches and 20 rows over 10 cm (4 inches), which is essential to verify before beginning to ensure proper fit.
