Product Description
One thing I love about stranding knitting is how stitches look like little hearts in designs. I designed this hat wanting to utilize this where it looks like hearts are floating all around the design of triangles.
This beanie is made a round on circular needles and decreased on double pointed needles. This means there are no seams and minimal finishing afterwards. The Fair Isle pattern is completed with two colors following a chart. Although combining a Fair Isle pattern with knitting in the round may sound complicated, I find it’s easier since I don’t get mixed up on the wrong side stitches. You just have to be careful about not to keeping the tension on the yarn too tight as you carry it along the back.

What is Being Made
The Stranded Hearts Beanie is a knitted hat designed by Julee Mackessy featuring a decorative Fair Isle pattern. This beanie showcases a creative use of stranded colorwork where the natural appearance of overlapping stitches creates the visual effect of hearts floating throughout a triangular design motif. The hat is constructed seamlessly in the round, resulting in a finished garment with minimal finishing work required.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level project employs several key knitting techniques:
- Stranded colorwork: Also known as Fair Isle knitting, this technique uses two colors worked simultaneously to create the patterned design. The unused color is carried along the inside of the work, creating natural "floats" that contribute to the visual heart shapes in the finished fabric.
- Knitting in the round: The beanie is constructed circularly using circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and allows the knitter to view the pattern continuously from the right side as it develops.
- Decreasing on double-pointed needles: As the crown of the hat is shaped, the work transitions from circular needles to double-pointed needles for the final decreases, creating a seamless top closure.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The Stranded Hearts Beanie uses stockinette stitch as the foundation, worked in the round to create a smooth fabric. The Fair Isle pattern is followed from a provided chart and worked with two colors throughout the design sections. The pattern creates visual heart shapes through the interplay of the stranded colorwork technique, where the floats of carried yarn naturally form heart-like formations within the triangular design elements.
Materials
This pattern is designed for chunky weight yarn and requires circular needles for the main construction and double-pointed needles for the crown decreases. The two-color Fair Isle pattern requires yarn in two contrasting colors.
Pattern Format
The Stranded Hearts Beanie is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it convenient for digital access and printing.
