What you'll need

Product Description

Big winds and waves have transformed the Irish Brandon Bay into one of Europe’s premier kitesurfing destinations. Stradbally is one of the towns at the bay.

Inspired by the place, these mitts are rustic and soft at the same time. They’re worked in half fisherman’s rib with the thick plain-knitted ribs giving way to one wave.

The mitts are worked bottom-up. Starting with a provisional tubular cast-on and (k1, p1) ribbing, the stitch pattern switches to half fisherman’s rib with a relief formed by cabling.

The pattern showcases not only semi-solids, but also variegated one-of-a-kind yarns.

Stradbally Mitts by Sabrina Schumacher

What is Being Made

The Stradbally Mitts are a pair of knitted fingerless mitts inspired by Stradbally, a town located at Brandon Bay in Ireland, a renowned kitesurfing destination. These mitts combine rustic and soft qualities, designed to provide warmth while maintaining a refined aesthetic. The project is worked from the bottom up using a structured stitch pattern that creates visual interest through texture and relief.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Stradbally Mitts are constructed using several key knitting techniques that build complexity and visual appeal:

  • Provisional Tubular Cast-On: The mitts begin with a provisional tubular cast-on method, which creates a neat and polished edge. This cast-on technique is particularly effective for projects requiring a finished appearance at both ends of the work.
  • Ribbing Foundation: After the cast-on, knitters work (k1, p1) ribbing, which provides elasticity and helps the mitts conform comfortably to the hand.
  • Half Fisherman's Rib: The primary stitch pattern transitions to half fisherman's rib, a textured stitch that creates depth and visual complexity while remaining relatively accessible for intermediate-level knitters.
  • Cabling for Relief: Cabled elements are incorporated throughout the pattern to create relief and dimensional texture. The pattern notes that cables can be worked without a cable needle, offering flexibility in technique.
  • Wave Motif: The stitch pattern culminates in a wave design, which references the coastal inspiration of the project and adds a distinctive finishing element to the mitts.

Stitches Used

The Stradbally Mitts employ the following stitches:

  • Knit (k) and Purl (p) Stitches: Used in the foundational (k1, p1) ribbing that begins the project.
  • Half Fisherman's Rib: The primary stitch pattern that forms the body of the mitts, creating a thick, textured fabric with excellent insulating properties.
  • Cable Stitches: Used to create relief and dimensional interest within the half fisherman's rib pattern, adding visual complexity to the finished mitts.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Stradbally Mitts are worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable wear. The pattern is designed to showcase both semi-solid and variegated yarns, allowing knitters to highlight unique, one-of-a-kind yarn selections. The choice of DK weight combined with the half fisherman's rib stitch creates a fabric that is simultaneously substantial and refined.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Stradbally Mitts require familiarity with fundamental knitting techniques including ribbing, textured stitches, and cabling. While the half fisherman's rib stitch may be new to some knitters, the pattern provides guidance and references for learning this technique, making it accessible to those ready to expand their knitting skills beyond basic stockinette stitch projects.
