Product Description
Storybook is your perfect lounge wear: it's comfy, it's loose fitting and it comes with pockets. It is worked seamlessly from the top down. The pockets are worked at the same time as the tunic; there is very little finishing to be done. It's mostly stockinette stitch worked in the round, making it the perfect mindless knitting project. I made mine while reading storybooks to my toddler.
It has a unique placement of shortrows that shape the neck without disrupting the neckline pattern.
Storybook is graded with inclusive sizing in mind, from a finished chest of 88 cm / 34.75 inches to 175 cm / 69 inches, designed to be worn with 10-20.5 cm / 4-8 inches positive ease. Measurements are given in both inches and cm.
The sample was knit in Knit Picks Swish Worsted. A substitute yarn is shown below.
Storybook Knit Dress by Minimi Knit Design
Project Overview
Storybook is a seamless, top-down knit dress designed as comfortable lounge wear by designer Cristina T. Ghirlanda. This garment combines functionality with thoughtful construction, featuring integrated pockets worked simultaneously with the main tunic body. The design prioritizes minimal finishing work, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a relaxing, meditative knitting experience. The dress is graded with inclusive sizing, ranging from a finished chest of 88 cm (34 inches) to 175 cm (69 inches), and is designed to be worn with 10–20.5 cm (4–8 inches) of positive ease for a loose, comfortable fit.
Construction Technique
Storybook is worked seamlessly from the top down, a construction method that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a garment with minimal finishing requirements. The pockets are ingeniously integrated into the tunic construction, being worked at the same time as the main body rather than added afterward. This simultaneous pocket integration significantly reduces finishing work and creates a cohesive garment structure. The dress features a unique placement of short rows that strategically shape the neckline without disrupting the stitch pattern at the neck opening, demonstrating advanced shaping technique.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern used throughout Storybook is stockinette stitch, worked in the round. Stockinette stitch—created by knitting all stitches on the right side and purling all stitches on the wrong side when working flat, or knitting every round when working in the round—produces a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-shaped texture. Because the dress is worked in the round, the stockinette creates an even, meditative rhythm that requires minimal pattern attention, making this an excellent mindless knitting project suitable for knitting while engaged in other activities such as reading.
Materials and Yarn
Storybook is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight category ideal for creating garments with good drape and structure. The sample shown was knit using Knit Picks Swish Worsted, a yarn composed of 100% Merino wool. This particular yarn is available in 50-gram (1.75-ounce) skeins with a yardage of 101 meters (110 yards) per skein. The sample was worked in the colorway Marine Heather. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 10 to 17 skeins depending on the finished chest measurement selected.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires 5.5 mm needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn. Additional notions needed include a stitch marker for tracking round beginnings and pattern repeats, waste yarn for holding stitches during pocket construction and other provisional techniques, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and any necessary finishing details.
Skill Level
Storybook is classified as an advanced knitting project. While the primary stitch pattern of stockinette stitch in the round is fundamental, the advanced difficulty reflects the seamless top-down construction method, the integration of pockets worked simultaneously with the body, and the sophisticated short-row shaping technique used to create the neckline. Knitters should be comfortable with in-the-round knitting, understanding increases and decreases for shaping, and interpreting stitch markers and pattern instructions for complex garment construction.
