Product Description

Stoke ticks all the boxes - an easy to wear, stylish hat which is so quick and simple to knit that you’ll always want one on the needles. Why not go ahead and make one for every member of the family? With sizes ranging all the way from baby to large adult, there’s no reason why you can’t!

You’ll cast on at the brim and work the ribbing first. Once that is long enough to be folded over for extra warmth, you’ll start working through your colour gradient in the stranded colourwork section. This is the ideal pattern for you if you’re new to colourwork because the pattern is super easy to remember and all the floats are the same (short!) length. Once that’s done, all that’s left is to decrease for the crown and attach the biggest pompom you can find.

Please note: While the larger sizes are designed to be worn slouchy as per the photographed sample, the baby and toddler sizes are written to fit closer to the head.

Stoke Knit Hat by WoolGatherer Designs

What Is Being Made

Stoke is a downloadable knitting pattern for a versatile, quick-to-knit hat designed by WoolGatherer Designs. This project offers multiple size options ranging from baby through large adult, making it an ideal choice for creating matching hats across an entire family. The finished circumferences span from 13 inches for baby sizes up to 20½ inches for large adults, ensuring a proper fit for wearers of all ages.

Construction and Techniques

The Stoke hat employs a top-down construction method that begins with casting on at the brim. The pattern is specifically designed to be approachable and quick to complete, making it suitable for knitters who want a satisfying project that doesn't demand extensive time commitment. The hat features a folded ribbing section at the brim, which provides both structural integrity and extra warmth when folded over.

The most distinctive element of this pattern is its stranded colorwork section, which uses a simple, easy-to-remember pattern repeat. This makes Stoke an excellent introduction to colorwork techniques for knitters new to working with multiple colors. The design ensures that all floats—the strands of yarn carried across the back of the work—remain consistently short in length, eliminating the frustration of managing long floats that can catch and distort the fabric.

After completing the colorwork, the crown shaping is accomplished through strategic decreases that taper the hat to its finished point. The pattern concludes with the attachment of a large pompom, adding a playful finishing touch.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbing stitch for the brim section
  • Stranded colorwork (also called Fair Isle knitting) for the main pattern repeat
  • Decreases for crown shaping

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Stoke is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn that provides excellent stitch definition while remaining quick to knit. The yardage requirements vary by size, beginning at 30 yards for the smallest baby size and increasing to 45 yards for larger sizes, making this an economical project perfect for using up yarn from your stash or exploring new colors without significant material investment.

The pattern is worked on standard knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn. A large pompom serves as the finishing embellishment, which can be handmade or purchased to suit your preference.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, Stoke assumes basic knitting competency including cast-on, knit and purl stitches, and decreases. The intermediate classification primarily reflects the introduction of stranded colorwork; however, the pattern's straightforward repeat and consistent float lengths make it an accessible entry point into this technique for knitters ready to expand their skills.
