Product Description
Each time I open a stitch dictionary, I see a new stitch pattern that I want to try. There are so many possible textures that can be created with crochet – the combinations are endless. This blanket was inspired by a series of swatches worked in the summer of 2011, a summer which seemed to also include a parade of new babies in my circle of family and friends. Since I spend a lot of time crocheting on the go while my kids climb on the playground, I decided that a blanket made up of squares that could fit in my bag was the best strategy for being productive.
The blanket as designed is made up of 24 squares using 4 colors and 6 different stitch patterns. If you need a larger blanket for a bigger kid or for yourself, all you need to do is make more squares.
Stitch patterns used in the blanket squares use basic crochet stitches, a variety of decrease stitches, a spike stitch, a bobble, and crocheting into the back loop.
Stitch Pattern Sampler Blanket by Amy Maceyko
Project Overview
The Stitch Pattern Sampler Blanket is a modular crochet project designed by Amy Maceyko that celebrates the versatility and texture possibilities of crochet stitching. This blanket was inspired by a collection of swatches created in summer 2011 and developed as a practical project for crafting on the go. The design allows crocheters to explore multiple stitch techniques within a single cohesive blanket, making it an ideal project for intermediate-level crafters seeking to expand their stitch repertoire.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a customizable blanket constructed from individual squares that can be assembled to any desired finished size. The blanket as originally designed comprises 24 squares worked in 4 coordinating colors, allowing the crocheter to experiment with different stitch patterns while maintaining design cohesion. The modular square construction makes this blanket portable and convenient for crafting in various settings, from playgrounds to travel situations. Crafters can easily scale the project larger by making additional squares, adapting the blanket to fit different recipients or personal preferences.
Crochet Techniques Used
This project employs a range of intermediate crochet techniques that build upon foundational skills. The blanket incorporates various textural approaches to create visual and tactile interest across the different square designs.
- Basic Crochet Stitches: The foundation of each square utilizes fundamental crochet stitches that form the structural base of the stitch patterns.
- Decrease Stitches: A variety of decrease techniques are employed throughout the squares to shape stitches and create specific textural effects.
- Spike Stitch: This technique adds dimensional interest by working into stitches from previous rows at varied heights, creating a distinctive raised effect.
- Bobble Stitch: Bobbles are incorporated to add three-dimensional texture and visual pop to select squares within the blanket.
- Back Loop Crocheting: Working into the back loop only creates ridged textures and is used strategically throughout the design to vary the surface appearance of different squares.
Stitch Patterns Featured
The blanket showcases 6 different stitch patterns distributed across the 24 squares. This variety ensures that each square presents a unique texture and visual character while maintaining overall design harmony through the coordinated color palette. The combination of these distinct stitch patterns demonstrates the extensive range of textures achievable through crochet, making this project both an educational tool and a beautiful finished piece.
Materials and Specifications
The Stitch Pattern Sampler Blanket is worked with worsted weight yarn in 4 colors, providing excellent stitch definition and comfortable drape for a finished blanket. Worsted weight yarn is ideal for this project as it allows stitch patterns to be clearly visible while maintaining reasonable project completion time. A standard crochet hook appropriate for worsted weight yarn is used throughout the project. The downloadable PDF format provides complete instructions, stitch pattern details, and assembly guidance for creating this intermediate-level blanket.
Skill Level and Customization
Designed for intermediate crocheters, this project assumes familiarity with basic crochet fundamentals while introducing more advanced techniques such as bobbles, spike stitches, and varied decrease methods. The modular design offers significant customization potential—crafters can adjust the final blanket size by making more or fewer squares, experiment with different color combinations beyond the original 4-color scheme, or focus on particular stitch patterns of personal interest. This flexibility makes the project suitable for various skill development goals and personal preferences.
