Steve's Beanie – Free Knitted Hat Pattern in Caron Simply Soft (Downloadable PDF)
Steve's Beanie is a free, beginner-friendly knitting pattern for a classic adult-sized beanie hat, available as a downloadable PDF. Designed to fit an average adult head, this project is worked entirely in the round from the crown downward using double-pointed needles, making it an excellent introduction to circular knitting and top-down hat construction. The finished hat measures 10 inches (25.5 cm) in length, providing a comfortable, full-coverage fit.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a single, one-size-fits-most adult beanie hat. The design begins at the crown with just 6 cast-on stitches and expands outward through a series of carefully placed increase rounds, ultimately reaching 84 stitches before transitioning into a deep ribbed body. The hat is cast off loosely in pattern to ensure a stretchy, comfortable edge.
Techniques Used
- Top-down crown construction – the hat is started at the very top and shaped outward, eliminating the need for seaming or grafting
- Knitting in the round on double-pointed needles, with stitches divided evenly across three needles and a stitch marker placed on the first stitch
- Kfb (knit front and back) increases used in the very first round to double the initial cast-on
- M1 (Make 1 knitwise) increases worked by picking up the horizontal bar before the next stitch and knitting into the back of the loop
- M1P (Make 1 purlwise) increases worked by picking up the horizontal bar before the next stitch and purling into the back of the loop
- Alternating increase rounds – M1 and M1P increases are staggered across 13 rounds to seamlessly integrate new stitches into the growing rib pattern
- K1, P1 ribbing worked continuously for the body of the hat until the work measures the full 10 inches from the beginning
- Loose cast-off in pattern to maintain the elasticity of the ribbed brim
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) – the foundational stitch used throughout the crown and ribbing
- Purl (P) – alternated with knit stitches to create the classic 1×1 rib texture
- Kfb – a simple increase stitch ideal for beginners, used in Round 1
- M1 (Make 1 knitwise) – a nearly invisible increase that blends into the knit columns of the rib
- M1P (Make 1 purlwise) – a nearly invisible increase that blends into the purl columns of the rib
- K1, P1 rib – a stretchy, textured stitch pattern that forms the majority of the hat body and gives the beanie its characteristic fitted look
Materials Required
- Yarn: Caron Simply Soft in Red (9729) – 1 ball (6 oz / 170 g; 315 yds / 288 m). Caron Simply Soft is an aran weight yarn, offering a smooth, soft texture that works up quickly and is comfortable against the skin.

Gauge
