Product Description

This is a perfect way to use up yarns from your “stash” or leftovers from other projects. You can go right to the end of each ball. There is no particular length required. Nor do you have to keep in the ribbing pattern order I have given. You will get to sample 9 ribbing patterns, which vary from a single row repeat to a 4 row repeat. They are basic and easy stitches but have glorious looks. You can choose to use all the patterns or just a few....or even just one. There is no right or wrong side so you can end on any row and any side.

Yarn: Choose various yarns of the same weight. Worsted weight yarns will give a width of approximately 5 - 6”.

Needles: 1 set of straight in a size appropriate for the weight of yarns you choose.

Notes: Some patterns require 31 sts and some 32 sts. The beginning row for all is knit. Adjust stitch count in the center of this row if needed.

Stash Eater Sampler Scarf #1: Ribbing by Carolyn Doe

What Is Being Made

The Stash Eater Sampler Scarf #1: Ribbing is a knitted scarf designed to showcase multiple ribbing stitch patterns while using up yarn scraps and leftovers from your stash. This project offers creative flexibility, allowing knitters to sample nine different ribbing variations or select only their favorites. The scarf has no required finished length, making it an ideal stash-busting project that can be worked until yarn runs out. With no defined right or wrong side, the scarf can be completed on any row or either side, providing complete freedom in the finishing process.

Techniques and Construction

This knitting project is built on fundamental ribbing techniques, which create textured vertical columns of knit and purl stitches. Ribbing is a classic knitting technique that produces an elastic, dimensional fabric ideal for scarves. The pattern guides knitters through sampling nine distinct ribbing variations, each with different stitch repeats ranging from single-row repeats to four-row repeats. The design encourages experimentation by allowing knitters to work the patterns in any order they choose, or to focus on just one or a few favorites. This flexible approach makes the project both educational and practical for stash management.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch – the foundational stitch used throughout
  • Purl stitch – combined with knit stitches to create ribbed texture
  • Ribbing patterns – nine variations featuring different knit and purl combinations with repeats ranging from 1 to 4 rows

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, including DK, worsted weight, aran, and chunky options. Knitters can select various yarns of the same weight to create a multi-colored or multi-textured scarf. Worsted weight yarns will produce a scarf width of approximately 5 to 6 inches. The design allows knitters to work until each yarn ball is completely used, with no yarn waste.

Needles: One set of straight needles in a size appropriate for the yarn weight chosen. Needle sizing should match the yarn weight being used to achieve proper fabric drape and elasticity.

Pattern Details

The scarf begins with a cast-on of 31 stitches, though some ribbing patterns require 32 stitches. The opening row for all patterns is a knit row, with stitch count adjustments made in the center of this row if needed for specific pattern requirements. This beginner-friendly project requires only basic knitting knowledge, making it accessible to newer knitters while offering interesting visual results through the variety of ribbing textures.
