Product Description
This stunning rectangular lace wrap was inspired by the skyline of flowers and starry skies.
This wrap is worked flat as two pieces, starting from the narrow moss (seed) stitch edging at each end. The two pieces are grafted together at the centre of the wrap with Kitchener Stitch so that each end of the wrap is identical. The even rows of the lace work are purled plain and the odd rows worked with the lace detail.
The finished size after blocking is a width of 15” (38cm) and length of 60” (152.5cm). However, this wrap can easily be made longer or wider with additional repeats of the lace charts.
The photographed sample was knit with 3mm (2.5US) straight needles and 1 skein of Sweet Paprika, Grazioso yarn (65% silk, 35% linen), 115 grams/690 meters (756 yards), in Dandelion colour; however, there are many other wonderful colours.
The pattern includes charts for the lace work.
Enjoy and happy knitting!
Starry Skies Wrap by MunroSisters3
What is Being Made
The Starry Skies Wrap is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl designed by Fiona Munro from MunroSisters3. This elegant wrap measures 60 inches (152.5 centimeters) in length and 15 inches (38 centimeters) in width, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping. The pattern is offered in one size and is available as a downloadable PDF.
Techniques Used
This knitting project employs lace knitting techniques to create an intricate, openwork design. The pattern features a repeating Stars Chart that forms the decorative element of the wrap. Knitters maintain garter stitch borders on the first and last 3 stitches of each row on the right side and wrong side, which provides structure and a finished edge. The wrap construction involves working chart repeats until the piece reaches the desired length, demonstrating fundamental lace knitting skills suitable for beginners.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch: Worked on the first and last 3 stitches of each row to create selvage edges and frame the lace pattern
- Lace Pattern: Created using the Stars Chart, which repeats over 24 rows and is worked across stitches 13-19 of the pattern repeat
- Knit Stitch: The foundational stitch used throughout the wrap construction
Materials and Tools
The Starry Skies Wrap requires 690 meters (756 yards) of lace weight yarn. The sample was knitted using one skein of Grazioso yarn in the Dandelion colorway, which is composed of 65 percent silk and 35 percent linen, weighing 115 grams. Knitters should use 3mm (US 2.5) needles or adjust needle size to obtain the specified gauge of 26 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the lace pattern. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers to track pattern repeats, a stitch holder or spare needle for holding stitches, and pins for blocking the finished wrap to shape and even out the lace.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with casting on 97 stitches and features a charted lace design that repeats throughout the project. Knitters work the Stars Chart continuously, maintaining the garter stitch selvage edges, until the wrap reaches its finished length of 60 inches. The use of stitch markers helps track the pattern repeats and ensures accuracy when working the lace sections.
