Product Description
Star light, star bright, First star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, Have the wish I wish tonight.
The StarLight shawl is a double-knit triangular shawl. The pattern allows you to adjust the size of the shawl.
2 x 135 g of fingering weight yarn in contrasting colours will give you a shawl which is 184 cm (72") long and 33 cm (13") wide at the midpoint.
For my StarLight shawl I used 2 skeins of Wollmeise 100% Sockenwolle, but there are several other yarns that would work well, including Sappho II or Skinny Bugga from the Sanguine Gryphon, or Kauni, or Palette from KnitPicks, or just about any other fingering weight yarn.
The pattern includes detailed instructions on double-knitting. So it is an excellent way to learn a new technique. If you're already a double-knitting expert, just enjoy the shawl.
Since it is double-knit, the shawl is fully reversible.

StarLight Shawl by Anna Dalvi
Project Overview
The StarLight Shawl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Anna Dalvi. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a reversible shawl using the double knitting technique, a sophisticated method that produces a double-thick, reversible fabric with inverted color patterns on each side.
What Is Being Made
The StarLight Shawl is a knitted shawl featuring a charted pattern worked in double knitting. The design incorporates contrasting colors throughout, creating a visually striking piece that is fully reversible—both sides display the same pattern with colors inverted, making it a versatile accessory suitable for wearing either side out.
Techniques Used
Double Knitting is the primary technique used in this pattern. Double knitting is an advanced colorwork method that produces a reversible, double-thick knitted fabric. Unlike traditional stranded colorwork, double knitting creates two complete layers of fabric simultaneously, with the pattern colors inverted on each side. Both sides of the finished shawl resemble stockinette knitting, providing a polished, professional appearance on both the front and back.
The pattern offers flexibility in execution, as double knitting can be accomplished using two different methods: the two-stranded method (holding both yarn strands while working) or the slip-and-slide method. The choice between these approaches allows knitters to select the technique that feels most comfortable and produces their preferred fabric characteristics.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The StarLight Shawl uses a charted stitch pattern worked in double knitting. In double knitting charts, each square represents two stitches rather than one. The knitting sequence involves knitting one stitch with the pattern color facing you, then purling the next stitch with the contrasting color. This alternating knit-purl sequence, worked across both colors, creates the reversible double-knit fabric. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 23 stitches and 36 rows over 10 centimeters in pattern.
Materials
The StarLight Shawl requires 2 skeins of Wollmeise 100% Sockenwolle in two contrasting colors. Each skein contains 150 grams and 525 meters of yarn, providing ample yardage for the complete project. The yarn weight is 4-ply, a fingering-weight yarn ideal for creating detailed colorwork and achieving the specified gauge. Knitters will need 2.75 mm needles and a tapestry needle for finishing.
