Starfish Potholders by Tanja Osswald

What is Being Made

These are textured crochet potholders designed by Tanja Osswald, featuring a starfish-inspired form. Each potholder measures approximately 23 cm (9 inches) in diameter, making them functional kitchen accessories with decorative appeal. The design combines practical heat protection with an interesting three-dimensional shape created through innovative construction techniques.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Starfish Potholders are constructed using several advanced crochet techniques that work together to create their distinctive appearance and structure:

  • Slip Stitch Construction: The potholders are worked entirely in slip stitches, which create a dense, textured fabric ideal for heat protection and durability.
  • Short Rows: This technique is employed to shape the potholder and create dimensional form, allowing the fabric to develop curves and depth rather than remaining flat.
  • Modular Crochet: The design uses modular construction methods, meaning the potholder is built from separate sections that are joined together to form the complete starfish shape.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches, with particular emphasis on slip stitches throughout the design. The flat rib pattern alternates between front loop only slip stitches in odd rows and back loop slip stitches in even rows, creating the textured surface characteristic of these potholders. This stitch combination produces a gauge of approximately 24 stitches and 30 rows per 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Starfish Potholders are designed for sport weight yarn, specifically 4ply cotton. The original pattern calls for Lana Grossa Cotone yarn:

  • Approximately 40 grams of Lana Grossa Cotone in blue (color 34), equaling 99.5 meters or 108.8 yards
  • Approximately 25 grams of Lana Grossa Cotone in white (color 22), equaling 62.2 meters or 68.0 yards
  • A 3.5 mm crochet hook

The pattern notes that any 4ply cotton yarn is suitable as a substitute. The sample potholder shown weighs 64 grams total. Since individual crochet tension varies, having a few extra grams of yarn on hand is recommended to ensure sufficient yardage for completion.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is classified as advanced difficulty. The combination of slip stitch work, short row shaping, and modular construction techniques requires solid foundational crochet knowledge and comfort with more complex shaping methods.
