This Starburst Wrap was created with Advent Mini Skeins in mind. It is a great pattern for either using up those mini skeins, or for stash busting all of your 4 ply scrap yarns.
The wrap is a very generous size, and can be used in a variety of ways, including a stunning wrap/shawl and as a lap throw too.
Pattern uses UK terminology. Worked from the bottom up, with rows getting wider as you work.
It is of very simple construction, and you can easily make this wrap smaller if you wish, by ending your pattern repeats early.

Bobble Stitch. (Instructions are provided within the pattern.)

What is Being Made
The Starburst Wrap is a triangular knitted shawl designed as a Christmas 2020 Advent pattern. This intermediate-level project creates a generous wrap measuring approximately 74 inches (188 centimeters) along the top edge, 81 inches (205 centimeters) along the left side edge, and 124 inches (315 centimeters) diagonally at the widest point. The triangular construction makes this wrap versatile for draping over shoulders or wearing as a generous shawlette.
Techniques Used
This knitting pattern employs several key techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The construction utilizes stitch markers to track progress throughout the project, with instructions to slip markers from the left needle to the right needle as you work across rows. The pattern incorporates garter stitch sections as part of the bobble stitch construction, creating textural interest and dimensional detail throughout the wrap.
Stitches Used
The primary specialty stitch featured in the Starburst Wrap is the bobble stitch (MB). This decorative stitch is created through a specific sequence: knit front and back twice into the next stitch, then knit into the front loop of the same stitch, creating five stitches from one stitch. The bobble is then completed by turning and working four rows in garter stitch into these five stitches only. To finish the bobble, use the left-hand needle to lift the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th stitches over the 1st stitch and off the needle, leaving one stitch remaining. This technique creates the distinctive starburst texture that gives the wrap its name.
Materials
The Starburst Wrap is designed to be worked with 4 ply sock yarn, requiring approximately 2040 meters of yarn total. Kernow Designs recommends using either of the following yarn options for optimal results:
- 24 or more 20-gram mini skeins at 85 meters each (pre-wound into large cakes to minimize color changes and simplify working with multiple small skeins)
The yarn shown in the original pattern is the Christmas 2020 Advent yarn by Kernow Designs. Standard knitting needles appropriate for 4 ply yarn weight are required, along with stitch markers to track pattern progression throughout the project.
