Product Description
Anyone who knows me will tell you that it was quite a while since I was at school. Despite this, I still have one pair of socks from my school uniform that have survived all these years and are still in regular use. I thought it might be nice to recognise their longevity and recreate them.
These toe-up socks feature a simple pattern of twisted stitches, along with a reverse stocking stitch gusset and an Eye of Partridge heel flap. The pattern is written with instructions for Magic Loop but there is no reason why you shouldn't knit with another style of needle if that is your preference.
Techniques Used• Magic Loop • Judy's Magic Cast-On • Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off • Twisted stitches
Stand the Test of Time Socks by Jo Torr
What is Being Made
Stand the Test of Time is a pair of toe-up socks designed by Jo Torr, inspired by a cherished pair of school uniform socks that have endured decades of regular use. This knitting pattern celebrates longevity and timeless design through a classic sock construction featuring a simple twisted stitch pattern combined with functional heel and gusset shaping. The socks are available in three sizes to fit mid-foot circumferences of 7 inches (Small), 8 inches (Medium), and 9 inches (Large).
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting pattern incorporates several essential sock-knitting techniques that contribute to both the aesthetic appeal and durability of the finished socks:
- Magic Loop: The pattern is written with Magic Loop instructions as the primary needle technique, allowing knitters to work small circumferences using a single long circular needle. Alternative needle styles are accommodated if preferred.
- Judy's Magic Cast-On: This specialized cast-on method creates a flexible, seamless foundation ideal for toe-up sock construction, establishing two live stitches simultaneously for the sock toe.
- Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off: A specialized bind-off technique that provides superior elasticity and comfort around the sock cuff, ensuring the finished socks remain securely in place without restricting circulation.
- Twisted Stitches: A simple stitch pattern that adds visual interest and texture while maintaining the classic aesthetic that inspired the design.
- Eye of Partridge Heel Flap: A traditional heel construction method that creates a durable, reinforced heel through strategic stitch placement, extending sock longevity through areas subject to wear.
- Reverse Stocking Stitch Gusset: The gusset shaping incorporates reverse stocking stitch, providing both structural support and visual contrast to the sock design.
Stitches Used
The sock pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches executed with specific techniques. Twisted stitches form the primary decorative element, creating texture through modified stitch orientation. Stocking stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows) comprises the main fabric, while reverse stocking stitch appears in the gusset section. The Eye of Partridge heel flap uses alternating knit and slip stitches to create a reinforced, textured heel structure renowned for durability.
Materials
Stand the Test of Time requires 100 grams of 4ply (also known as fingering weight) sock yarn. Any yarn meeting the specified gauge is suitable for this project. The sample socks were knitted in Giddy Aunt's Platinum Sock yarn. Knitters will need needles appropriate for their chosen technique—either a single long circular needle for Magic Loop or alternative needle styles of their preference, sized to achieve proper gauge with the selected yarn.
Pattern Details
This downloadable PDF pattern is designed for intermediate-level knitters with foundational sock-knitting experience. The toe-up construction method begins at the sock toe and progresses toward the cuff, allowing for easy customization of sock length. The combination of twisted stitch patterning with functional heel and gusset shaping creates socks built to withstand regular use, honoring the inspiration behind the design.
