Product Description
These fingerless gloves feature a fitted thumb gusset, and twisted Bavarian cables. Inspired by the majestic stalactite formations growing from cave ceilings and ending in a drop on the back of the hand. The cuff has cables all around.
Seven Fingerless Mittens I have recently become addicted to knitting fingerless mittens, because they are such a wonderful garment for exploring textures and colours - small enough to take anywhere, and the finished object can be worn and admired easily (unlike socks, which tend to hide in shoes).
All the fingerless mittens/gloves are knit with fingering weight yarn. Unless otherwise specified, semi-solid and solid colours will yield the best result. Highly variegated yarns tend to obscure the pattern.
The patterns will be released as they are ready throughout 2011, and you will receive an email notice each time an update is available. Please click on the link and download the latest version of the ebook. Each update will include
Stalactite Fingerless Gloves by Anna Dalvi
What Is Being Made
Stalactite is a pair of fingerless gloves designed by Anna Dalvi, featuring a fitted thumb gusset and intricate twisted Bavarian cables. The design draws inspiration from natural stalactite formations found in cave ceilings, with the cable pattern creating a distinctive drop motif across the back of the hand. These gloves are finished to fit Women's M size with a hand circumference of 6.5" to 7.5" when blocked.
Knitting Techniques Used
This advanced knitting project employs several sophisticated techniques to achieve its elegant aesthetic. The gloves are constructed in the round using a cabled cast-on method, which provides a secure and flexible foundation. The design incorporates a fitted thumb gusset, a technique that creates a comfortable, well-shaped opening for the thumb while maintaining the integrity of the hand portion. Twisted Bavarian cables form the primary decorative element, running continuously around the cuff and extending down the back of the hand. Cable work requires the use of cable needles to create the characteristic twisted rope-like texture by crossing groups of stitches over one another.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Stalactite pattern utilizes cable stitches as its foundation, with the cuff featuring cables all around the circumference. The design is worked from charted instructions, with the cuff pattern repeated across two sections of the round. The twisted Bavarian cables create the stalactite-inspired drop formations on the back of the hand, requiring careful attention to cable crossing sequences as outlined in the pattern charts.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: 1 skein of fingering weight yarn (100% wool – 440 yards/400 meters per 100 grams)
- Needles: 2.5 mm (US 1½) needles for main knitting
- Additional Tools: 2 cable needles for cable work and 1 tapestry needle for finishing
- Gauge: 7 stitches x 11 rows = 1 inch (measured over stockinette stitch)
- Finished Size: Women's M with hand circumference of 6.5" to 7.5" when blocked
Pattern Details
The gloves begin with a cabled cast-on of 48 stitches, joined in the round with careful attention to avoid twisting. The cuff section is worked following charted rows that establish the cable pattern, with the chart rows repeated twice per round to create the symmetrical design around the hand. The advanced difficulty rating reflects the complexity of managing cable crossings while working in the round and the precision required for the fitted thumb gusset shaping.
