Product Description
This colourful mandala pattern is intermediate in level. It uses a variety of clusters, shells, and front post stitches to create a stained glass effect. The magic ring, back post stitches, standing starts and invisible joins are also used. Written instructions are included for all atypical stitches. Written instructions and photos for the various steps of the pattern are included as well as a detailed crochet chart. This pattern is written in UK crochet terms.
You will need• 3mm crochet hook • 4ply/sport weight mercerised cotton yarn in 5 colours. I recommend Scheepjes Catona. You will need a dark colour for the “lead” of the glass, e.g. black. And 4 bright colours for the “glass”. Black: 15g Glass colour A: 2g Glass colour B: 5g Glass colour C: 7g Glass colour D: 7g • Yarn needle and scissors • 25 cm (10 inch) mandala hoop/craft ring/lampshade ring. A wooden ring spray painted black is a very effective mount.
Stained Glass Mandala Crochet Pattern
Project Overview
The Stained Glass Mandala is a decorative crochet project designed by Fiona Meade Crochet. This intermediate-level pattern creates a striking mandala-inspired decoration using colorful yarn to achieve a stained glass aesthetic. The finished piece showcases vibrant geometric patterns reminiscent of traditional stained glass artwork, making it an ideal decorative accent for home décor, wall hangings, or as a thoughtful handmade gift.
Craft and Technique
This project is created using the crochet technique, a versatile fiber craft that uses a single hook to form loops and interlocking stitches. Crochet allows for the creation of intricate, detailed patterns with relative ease compared to other fiber arts. The mandala structure in this design likely involves working in rounds from the center outward, a common approach for creating symmetrical, circular patterns. This technique builds dimensional depth and creates the characteristic radiating pattern that defines mandala designs.
Materials Required
- Crochet Hook: 3mm size
- Yarn: 4-ply mercerised cotton yarn in 5 different colors. The designer recommends Scheepjes brand yarn for this project
Yarn Weight and Fiber Content
This pattern accommodates 3-ply, 4-ply, and sport weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection. The use of mercerised cotton yarn provides a smooth, lustrous finish with excellent stitch definition, which is particularly important for showcasing the detailed geometric patterns of the mandala design. Mercerised cotton also offers durability and a professional appearance in the finished decoration.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, this mandala pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills and experience working with basic crochet stitches. Intermediate crafters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions, working in rounds, and managing color changes to achieve the multi-colored stained glass effect.
