Stagleap Cowl by Samantha Guerin

What is Being Made

Stagleap is a downloadable knitting pattern for a cowl designed by Samantha Guerin. This project creates a fitted neck accessory with two finished size options: a Small cowl measuring 25 inches in circumference at the top and 29 inches at the bottom, or a Large cowl measuring 41 inches at the top and 44 inches at the bottom. Both sizes stand 12 inches in height, making this a versatile cowl suitable for different wearing preferences and body sizes.

Techniques and Construction Methods

Stagleap employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that create visual interest and structural shaping. The pattern utilizes knitting in the round, which allows for seamless construction of the tubular cowl shape. Cable work forms the foundation of this design, with multiple cable crossing techniques creating the distinctive textured surface.

The pattern includes optional advanced finishing methods for those seeking a polished result. An alternating cable cast on is suggested as an optional starting technique, providing a decorative and elastic foundation edge. Similarly, a tubular bind off is offered as an optional finishing method, which creates a particularly neat and flexible edge that mimics the appearance of the cast-on.

Stitches and Cable Work

The stitch pattern combines fundamental knitting stitches with cable techniques. Knit and purl stitches form the base fabric, while cable crosses add dimension and texture. The pattern employs four distinct cable stitch variations:

  • 2/2 LC (Left Cable): Slip 2 stitches purlwise to cable needle, hold to front, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
  • 2/2 LPC (Left Purl Cable): Slip 2 stitches purlwise to cable needle, hold to front, purl 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
  • 2/2 RC (Right Cable): Slip 2 stitches purlwise to cable needle, hold to back, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
  • 2/2 RPC (Right Purl Cable): Slip 2 stitches purlwise to cable needle, hold to back, knit 2, then purl 2 from cable needle

These cable variations create a complex, interlocking pattern that defines the cowl's aesthetic appeal. The combination of left and right cables, along with purl cable options, allows for sophisticated cable arrangements that add depth and visual movement to the finished piece.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Stagleap is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight category ideal for creating fabric with good drape and structure. The pattern specifies Hudson + West Co 'Forge' yarn as the recommended fiber, which is composed of 70% U.S. Merino and 30% U.S. Corriedale. This blend combines the softness and breathability of Merino wool with the durability and resilience of Corriedale, creating a yarn suitable for both comfort and longevity.

Yardage requirements vary by size: the Small cowl requires 310 yards (2 skeins), while the Large cowl requires 470 yards (2 skeins). Knitters should select any similar worsted weight yarn with comparable yardage to substitute if the specified yarn is unavailable.

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for US 7 / 4.5 mm needles or the size needed to achieve the designer's intended gauge. A cable needle (CN) is essential for executing the cable stitches that form the pattern's primary design element. Circular needles in the appropriate size are implied for knitting in the round, though the pattern excerpt does not specify needle length.

Difficulty Level

Stagleap is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical abilities. While basic knitting in the round and cable techniques are required, the pattern assumes familiarity with these core methods. The optional advanced finishing techniques—alternating cable cast on and tubular bind off—provide opportunities for skill advancement but are not mandatory for completing the cowl.
