Product Description
Stacking Rings is the third pattern in the Playtime Collection, and as you may guess, it is inspired by that toy that small kids have, where you – stack rings. Yep. It’s all about something bright and happy, that is extremely flexible.
The design has two sizes, depending on whether you like to wrap your cowl or not, and is great for sock yarn leftovers! The small size can be knit mainly in 20g mini skeins, which can be useful if you’re like me and find yourself collecting minis…
This is one you can really make what you need out of it. I’ve gone bright, but it would be gorgeous in some calmer colours too. It just depends on you and the kinds of colours you want to wear.
Stacking Rings Cowl by Penny Baker
What Is Being Made
Stacking Rings is a colorful knitted cowl pattern designed by Penny Baker as the third design in the Playtime Collection. Inspired by the classic children's toy where rings stack onto a central post, this cowl celebrates bright, happy colors and flexible styling. The pattern offers two distinct sizes to suit different wearing preferences: one size wraps around the neck once for a standard fit, while the larger option provides extra wrapping capability for those who prefer a more voluminous cowl. This design is particularly well-suited for knitters with leftover sock yarn or collections of mini skeins, making it an excellent stash-busting project.
Design Features and Flexibility
The Stacking Rings cowl is engineered for maximum versatility. Knitters can customize the finished piece based on their yarn collection and personal preferences. The small size can be primarily constructed from 20-gram mini skeins, making it ideal for crafters who accumulate smaller yarn quantities. While the pattern shown features vibrant, bright colorways reminiscent of the toy inspiration, the design translates beautifully into calmer, more subdued color palettes depending on individual style preferences.
Techniques and Stitches Used
As an intermediate-level knitting pattern, Stacking Rings employs knitting techniques suitable for crafters with foundational skills and some experience. The pattern utilizes a stacking construction method that creates distinct color-blocked rings throughout the cowl, building visual interest through strategic color changes. This approach allows knitters to work with multiple contrast colors in a manageable way, adding complexity and visual appeal without requiring advanced colorwork techniques like stranding or intarsia.
Yarn and Materials
Stacking Rings is designed to work with 4-ply weight yarn, offering excellent stitch definition and drape. The pattern specifies Cartref Yarns 4ply for the main color, which features a blend of 67% Welsh Mule and 33% Welsh Bluefaced Leicester. This particular yarn provides approximately 361 meters per 100 grams (395 yards per 100 grams), offering good yardage for the cowl construction. The pattern accommodates contrast colors in mini skein format for the small size, allowing knitters to incorporate multiple coordinating or contrasting hues throughout the piece. Standard knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn weight are required to achieve proper gauge and fabric structure.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate pattern, Stacking Rings suits knitters who have mastered basic stitches and construction techniques and are ready to explore color work and more complex shaping. The pattern's design makes it accessible enough for experienced beginners while offering enough visual interest to engage intermediate knitters.
