Product Description

Two little squirrels from the same pattern. Only the ears are different! I have used the intarsia method for the body because I wanted white tummies but you could make it one colour, they would still look very sweet.

Squirrel Finger Puppets by Rymell

Project Overview

These Squirrel Finger Puppets are charming crocheted toys designed by Rymell as downloadable PDF patterns. The finger puppet format makes them perfect for interactive play, storytelling, or as delightful decorative pieces. This intermediate-level crochet project combines basic shaping techniques with colorwork to create a recognizable squirrel character suitable for crafters with some crochet experience.

What Is Being Made

The pattern creates small finger-sized puppet squirrels featuring a distinct head and body structure. The design incorporates colorwork details to represent the squirrel's characteristic markings, with a main body color contrasted by white accents. The finished puppets are small enough to fit comfortably on a finger, making them ideal for puppet play or as miniature decorative toys.

Techniques Used

  • Amigurumi-style construction: The head is worked in continuous rounds using the classic amigurumi technique, creating a three-dimensional spherical shape through strategic increases and decreases
  • Intarsia colorwork: The body section employs the intarsia method to incorporate color changes, allowing the crafter to create detailed patterns by switching yarn colors within rows while maintaining neat edges
  • Flat and circular working: The pattern combines circular rounds for the head with flat rows for the body, requiring familiarity with transitioning between these construction methods
  • Stuffing and shaping: The head is stuffed during construction to create dimension and structure before final closure
  • Color management: The intarsia technique requires careful yarn management, picking up and dropping yarn on the same side of the work to maintain consistency and prevent tangling

Stitches Used

  • Double crochet (dc): The primary stitch throughout both the head and body sections, providing structure and density
  • Double crochet two together (dc2tog): Used for decreasing stitches, particularly in the later rounds of the head to create the tapered shape and in the body to maintain stitch counts during color transitions
  • Chain stitch (ch): Used to establish the foundation for the body section with a 16-chain base
  • Slip stitch: Implied for joining rounds and fastening off securely

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This project uses DK weight yarn, a lightweight option that creates fine detail and allows for precise colorwork. Approximately 25 yards of DK yarn in the main body color is required, with small additional amounts of white yarn for the contrasting details. The pattern specifically recommends Stylecraft yarn in shades of tomato and silver as the illustrated colorway, though crafters may substitute other DK weight yarns in similar colors. A standard crochet hook appropriate for DK weight yarn completes the material requirements, along with fiberfill stuffing for the head and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces if needed.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes the crafter is comfortable with basic crochet stitches, can work in continuous rounds, understands shaping through increases and decreases, and has experience with color changes. The intarsia colorwork technique adds complexity beyond beginner patterns, making this an excellent project for developing advanced skills while still remaining achievable for experienced crafters.
