Squirrel Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What is Being Made
This is a crochet pattern for creating an amigurumi-style squirrel, a three-dimensional stuffed toy animal. The squirrel is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques to build a complete figure with distinct body sections, including the main body, limbs, and facial features. This intermediate-level project produces a finished decorative or play piece suitable for display or gifting.
Craft and Techniques
The pattern uses crochet as the primary construction method, employing UK crochet terminology and abbreviations throughout. The squirrel is built using standard amigurumi construction techniques, which involve working in continuous rounds or rows to create three-dimensional forms. The pattern incorporates shaping techniques such as increases (working multiple stitches into single stitches) to expand sections and create the characteristic proportions of a squirrel figure. Finishing techniques include embroidery work to add fine details and hand-stitching to attach components like eyes securely to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes several fundamental crochet stitches to construct the squirrel:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used to create foundation rows and turning chains
- Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch used throughout the body construction for building dense, structured fabric
- Half treble crochet (htr) – employed for creating varied stitch heights and texture
- Treble crochet (tr) – used to add additional stitch variation and height in specific sections
- Slip stitch (sl st) – utilized for joining rounds and finishing edges
These stitches are combined using increase techniques (working 2 or 3 stitches into a single stitch) to shape the three-dimensional form as the pattern progresses.
Materials Required
This pattern calls for 4 ply crochet cotton yarn in multiple colors to achieve the squirrel's natural appearance. Specifically, the designer used brown and black 4 ply crochet cotton for the main body and structural elements. A 1.25mm crochet hook is recommended to work with the fine 4 ply yarn weight, creating a tight, detailed fabric suitable for amigurumi construction.
Additional materials needed for finishing include scissors for cutting yarn, a sewing needle and thread for attaching eyes and securing components, and a darning needle for weaving in loose ends. The pattern also requires embroidery work using white sewing or embroidery cotton for eye details, cream sewing or embroidery cotton for tummy markings, and brown crochet cotton for additional embroidered markings that add character and definition to the finished squirrel.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex shaping and finishing techniques. The intermediate classification reflects the need to understand stitch increases, work with fine yarn and small hooks, and execute detailed embroidery work to complete the project successfully.
