Product Description
I just love knitting geometric patterns. I used to knit geometric patterns as I walked around knitting. The patterns just seem to flow from the knitting needles. I never wrote them down and they were almost impossible for me to go back and recreate them. Square Dance is my first attempt to sit down and knit a geometric pattern. I kept it simple by just working with different size squares and rectangles.
This is a one size pattern, 4’ 6” long by 6” wide. I used 1 skein of worsted weight yarn at 200 yards. Since this is a busy pattern I suggest a solid color yarn. If you wish to make it longer just buy an extra skein and Knit Rows 5 to 28 as many additional times as you would like.
The stitch markers are very important for this pattern. They will help you keep your place.
Square Dance Knitted Scarf by Sheri Karobonik
What is Being Made
Square Dance is a knitted scarf featuring geometric patterning created through the strategic arrangement of squares and rectangles. This intermediate-level knitting project combines simple geometric shapes to produce a visually striking design that flows naturally from the needles. The scarf showcases the designer's approach to translating freeform geometric concepts into a structured, reproducible knitting pattern.
Design Inspiration and Concept
Designer Sheri Karobonik drew inspiration from her longtime practice of creating geometric patterns while walking and knitting. After her daughter suggested a more intentional approach, Karobonik sat down to formally design and document one of these patterns for the first time. Square Dance represents this transition from spontaneous creation to deliberate pattern design, maintaining the organic flow of the original concept while providing clear, written instructions for reproducibility.
Knitting Techniques and Stitch Work
The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques centered on geometric construction. The primary method involves working with different size squares and rectangles to build the overall scarf design. This approach keeps the pattern accessible for intermediate knitters while creating complex visual interest through shape variation and placement. The geometric elements are achieved through basic knitting stitches arranged in a deliberate sequence that produces the distinctive square and rectangular motifs.
Materials and Tools Required
- Yarn: Approximately 200 yards (188 meters) of worsted weight yarn, totaling 3.5 ounces per hundred grams. The sample pictured uses Peacock Worsted Weight Yarn by Merinyvino, though Lambs Pride Super Wash Worsted or any Knitting Standard number 4 yarn of choice is suitable.
- Needles: U.S. 9 (5.5mm) knitting needles
- Yarn Weight Classification: Worsted weight provides the ideal thickness for creating well-defined geometric shapes with good stitch definition
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it appropriate for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with geometric pattern sequences and shape transitions.
