Spring Fade Cardigan by Jennifer Owens
What is Being Made
The Spring Fade Cardigan is a lightweight women's cardigan designed by Jennifer Owens, available in sizes S through XXL with finished bust measurements ranging from 36 to 51 inches. This seamless, top-down cardigan features a sophisticated color-fade design that blends multiple shades throughout the garment, making it an ideal spring knitting project. The cardigan includes a length of approximately 23½ to 27 inches depending on size, with sleeve lengths to the underarm measuring 13 to 14 inches.
Construction and Techniques
This cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down, a construction method that eliminates the need for seaming and allows for easy adjustments during knitting. The garment features raglan shaping, which creates diagonal lines from the neckline to the underarms, providing a flattering fit and elegant silhouette. The top-down raglan construction makes this an excellent intermediate-level project, as it allows knitters to try on the piece as they work and adjust the fit before completing the sleeves and body.
Stitches and Stitch Details
- Cable stitches: Symmetrical cables run along the front panels and sleeves, adding visual interest and texture to the design
- Eyelet stitches: Tiny eyelets are incorporated throughout the cardigan for delicate detail and breathability
- Seed stitch: Seed stitch provides additional textural variation and helps define certain sections of the garment
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Spring Fade Cardigan is designed for DK weight yarn, a versatile medium yarn weight that creates a lightweight fabric perfect for spring and transitional seasons. The project requires approximately 920 to 1020 yards of yarn depending on the size being knitted. DK weight yarn paired with appropriate needles creates a fabric with excellent drape and fluidity, ideal for a cardigan that showcases color gradation and stitch definition.
Sizing and Fit
The pattern provides five size options to accommodate different body measurements. The sample shown measures 36 inches at the bust with 2 inches of positive ease, and the pattern suggests 2 to 4 inches of total ease for comfortable wear. This ease recommendation allows for layering and movement while maintaining the cardigan's intended silhouette.
