Product Description

These items are worked as one continuous round, but written to show each round (UK terms used throughout), so a stitch marker is required to mark the end of the round.

Full instructions with photos are given in the pattern.

The sides of the doily and bowl are not even.

Materials required: For both bowl and doily 165 yards/150 metres (approx) No 10 or No 12 crochet cotton, 1.50 mm crochet hook. For either item individually approximately 85 yards/75 metres No 12 crochet cotton.

Finished sizes - Doily: approx 9-inches/23 cm across at widest part, Bowl: approx 6-inches/15 cm across, but will depend on shaping.

Gauge: Rounds 1-3 on either item approximately 1½-inches/4 cm across at widest part.

Smaller cobweb doilies and bowls can be worked for a hallowe'en setting, using No 80 crochet cotton and a size 0.60 mm hook. These will be approximately half the size shown above and the doily for example could then be used as a coaster.

Spider's Web Doily and Bowl by Frances Powell

What is Being Made

This crochet pattern set includes two coordinated home décor items: a delicate spider's web doily and a matching decorative bowl. Both pieces feature an intricate web-like design that creates an elegant, nature-inspired aesthetic suitable for display on tables, shelves, or as decorative accents. The doily measures approximately 9 inches (23 cm) across at its widest point, while the bowl spans approximately 6 inches (15 cm) across, though the final bowl dimensions may vary depending on how it is shaped and blocked.

Crochet Techniques Used

Both the doily and bowl are constructed using continuous rounds, a technique that creates seamless, circular pieces without joining or turning. This construction method is essential for achieving the realistic appearance of an actual spider's web. The continuous round technique requires careful marking of the beginning of each round to maintain pattern accuracy and stitch count throughout the project.

The spider's web motif is created through strategic placement of stitches that form the characteristic radial lines and connecting threads typical of web patterns. This intermediate-level technique requires attention to detail and consistent tension to ensure the delicate web structure develops properly.

Stitches Used

While the complete stitch list is not fully detailed in the provided content, the pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for lace-weight cotton work. The gauge reference indicates that rounds 1-3 of either item measure approximately 1½ inches (4 cm) across at the widest part, suggesting the use of fine, precise stitching techniques typical of delicate lace patterns.

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for No 12 crochet cotton, a fine, smooth yarn ideal for creating intricate lace designs. The designer used Anchor Freccia Crochet Cotton No 12 in colour 397 (silver grey) for the pictured samples. Total yardage requirements are as follows:

  • For both the bowl and doily together: approximately 165 yards (150 metres)
  • For either the bowl or doily individually: approximately 85 yards (75 metres)

Anchor Freccia Crochet Cotton No 12 is available in 50-gram balls, which contain approximately 285 metres of yarn, providing ample material for multiple projects.

Hook: A 1.50 mm crochet hook is required. This small hook size is essential for working with lace-weight cotton and creating the fine, detailed stitches necessary for the spider's web pattern.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Crocheters should have foundational skills in basic stitches and be comfortable working in continuous rounds with consistent tension. The requirement to mark round beginnings and maintain pattern accuracy throughout multiple rounds makes this suitable for crafters with some prior crochet experience rather than absolute beginners.

Project Classification

These pieces fall into the categories of both containers and decorations, as the bowl serves a functional decorative purpose while the doily functions purely as a decorative accent. Both items showcase the versatility of crochet for creating refined home décor pieces.
