Speedy Topper Baby Jacket by Taiga Hilliard Designs
What is Being Made
The Speedy Topper is a baby cardigan jacket designed by Taiga Hilliard Designs that features an off-center button closure, making it suitable for both boys and girls. This garment is engineered for quick completion, typically finished in a single afternoon or evening session. The design achieves a high-end boutique aesthetic while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The jacket does not require blocking after completion, streamlining the finishing process.
Construction Technique
This cardigan employs a top-down, seamless construction method, which eliminates the need for seaming and allows knitters to try on the garment during the knitting process for a custom fit. The off-center button placement adds visual interest and design sophistication to this otherwise straightforward construction approach.
Knitting Stitches and Techniques
The Speedy Topper incorporates fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters:
- Knit (K) – The basic knit stitch forms the primary fabric structure
- Purl (P) – Purl stitches create textural variation and are used selectively throughout the pattern
- Knit two together (K2tog) – This decrease stitch shapes the garment and creates fitted sections
- Yarn over (YO) – Creates decorative eyelets or lace elements within the design
- Knit front and back (Kfb) – An increase stitch that adds stitches for shaping and sizing
- Purl front and back (Pfb) – A purl-based increase stitch used for structured increases
- Slip marker (Sm) and Place marker (Pm) – Essential techniques for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections in seamless knitting
Yarn and Needle Specifications
The Speedy Topper is designed primarily for super bulky yarn, with the pattern sample knitted in Malabrigo Rasta in the Indiecita colorway. The designer provides flexible yarn alternatives: knitters may substitute by doubling bulky-weight yarn or using four strands of worsted or aran-weight yarn to achieve the desired fabric weight and drape.
The recommended needle size is US 15 (10.00 mm), though the pattern advises selecting the needle size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. This flexibility accommodates individual knitting tension variations.
Gauge and Yardage Requirements
The pattern specifies a gauge of 8.0 stitches over 4 inches, which is characteristic of super bulky yarn knitting and contributes to the rapid project completion. Total yardage ranges from 120 to 450 yards depending on the selected size, making this an economical project in terms of yarn consumption.
Available Sizes and Measurements
The Speedy Topper is offered in eight sizes spanning from newborn through early childhood:

- 6-12 months with 18" chest measurement

Notions and Finishing

Skill Level and Project Summary
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Speedy Topper is accessible to knitters with foundational skills who understand basic increases, decreases, and marker placement. The straightforward top-down construction combined with super bulky yarn weight accelerates project completion while maintaining the sophisticated, expensive appearance of a designer piece.
