Product Description
These slippers were inspired by the beautiful colors of sunflowers. They are made with bulky yarn so they work up quickly. I added a faux strap (decorative only) and tacked it down with a little sunflower for a fun look. Like the other slippers in this series, they sport a double sole and close fitting foot and ankle for comfort and maximum fit. I sized them for men and women and therefore the sizing is based on foot length. These have become my favorite slippers!
This is part of the Slipper Of The Month Series!
Designed in #4 worsted weight cotton (2 strands held together) Size: Women/Men’s sizes

Southold Slippers by Pattern Paradise
Project Overview
The Southold Slippers are an intermediate-level crochet project designed to create a comfortable, wearable pair of slippers. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Pattern Paradise provides detailed instructions for crafting cozy footwear using bulky weight yarn and fundamental crochet techniques.
What Is Being Made
These slippers are a complete footwear project that combines crochet construction with practical design. The pattern produces a finished pair of slippers suitable for everyday wear around the home, offering both comfort and style through thoughtful color work and construction methods.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Southold Slippers pattern employs several core crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The construction utilizes circular crochet methods, with rounds joined using slip stitches to create seamless transitions. The pattern incorporates color changes between two distinct yarn colors, allowing crafters to create visual interest and personalization in their finished slippers. The technique of weaving ends as you work is emphasized throughout, which helps minimize finishing time and creates a more polished final product.
Stitches Used
The pattern relies on fundamental crochet stitches that form the foundation of most crochet projects:
- Single Crochet (sc) – the primary stitch used for creating dense, sturdy fabric suitable for slippers
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – provides slightly more height and drape than single crochet
- Double Crochet (dc) – used for sections requiring more vertical stretch
- Chain (ch) – creates foundation chains and joining elements
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – joins rounds together to create seamless circular construction
Materials and Tools
The Southold Slippers pattern is designed to work with bulky weight yarn (#5), offering excellent stitch definition and relatively quick project completion. The original pattern recommends specific yarn brands: Lion Brand Homespun (185 yards per skein) and Loops & Threads Charisma (109 yards per skein). The pattern includes a yardage chart to help crafters determine exact quantities needed for their project.
For color work, the pattern specifies two colors: Color 1 (Homespun Wild Fire) and Color 2 (Charisma Yellow), though crafters may substitute alternative bulky weight yarns in their preferred colors. The pattern notes that two strands of worsted weight (#4) yarn worked together can successfully substitute for bulky weight, provided the crafter checks gauge before beginning.
Essential tools include a US I/5.50 mm crochet hook, which is appropriately sized for bulky yarn. The pattern also calls for eight stitch markers to track stitch placement and round progression, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and any finishing seams.
Gauge and Pattern Standards
The pattern establishes a gauge of 12 single crochet stitches by 14 rows measuring approximately 4 inches, which is essential for achieving proper slipper fit. The pattern is written in US Standard crochet terminology and includes detailed abbreviations and special notes. Important construction details include the clarification that the chain-1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch, and that stitch counts are provided in parentheses at the end of each round or row for easy tracking.
