Product Description

Don’t you love these little shawls that keep your shoulders - and a bit more - warm? Easy to knit, but interesting enough to keep you absorbed? “Someday” is the perfect little shawlette to knit and wear! All you need is a few skeins of your favorite yarn, a bunch of short rows in garter stitch and - voilá, there’s your shawlette!

Sample is shown in The Plucky Knitter Primo Fingering.

Please note that you will really need the entire two skeins (780 yards/714 meters) of this yarn to make this shawl. I have used up almost two whole skeins to make mine. The sample is made with Speakeasy (MC) and Wintry Mix (CC).

Someday Shawlette by Hanna Maciejewska

What is Being Made

Someday is a knitted shawlette designed to provide warmth across the shoulders and upper body. This is a compact, wearable shawl project that combines practicality with engaging knitting techniques, making it suitable for crafters who want a finished accessory without an extensive time commitment.

Knitting Techniques

The shawlette construction relies on short rows as the primary shaping technique, allowing the designer to create dimension and structure without complex decreases or increases across the entire piece. Short rows are worked using the wrap and turn method (abbreviated as w&t in the pattern), which prevents holes and creates smooth transitions in the fabric. This technique is fundamental to modern shawl design and adds visual interest while maintaining the simplicity of the base stitch.

The pattern incorporates a Texture Edge detail, which is worked in a contrasting color (CC) and frames the main body of the shawlette. This edge treatment adds a finished, polished appearance to the piece.

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch – the primary stitch throughout the shawlette, created by knitting every row on both right-side and wrong-side rows, producing a textured, reversible fabric
  • Knit through back loop (k1b) – a twisted knit stitch that adds subtle texture variation
  • Purl stitch (p1) – used in ribbed or textured sections to create contrast against knit stitches
  • Slip stitch (sm) – used as a stitch marker or edge treatment
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease used to shape the shawlette

Materials and Yarn Weight

The pattern calls for fingering weight yarn (4-ply), which is a fine yarn that creates delicate, detailed fabric. The designer specifies approximately 780 yards (714 meters) total, requiring two full skeins of yarn to complete the project.

The sample shown uses The Plucky Knitter Primo Fingering, a luxury blend composed of 75% Merino wool, 20% cashmere, and 5% nylon (polyamide). This fiber combination provides softness, warmth, and durability. The nylon content adds resilience, helping the shawlette maintain its shape through wear and washing. Knitters are encouraged to substitute their favorite fingering weight yarn, provided it knits to the specified gauge.

The pattern accommodates color work through the use of a main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC), allowing crafters to create visual interest and highlight the Texture Edge detail. The color changes are introduced at specific points in the pattern to frame the shawlette's edges.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, Someday is accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore short-row shaping and color changes. While garter stitch is beginner-friendly, the short-row technique and wrap-and-turn method require attention to pattern instructions and familiarity with working wraps on subsequent rows. The finished result rewards this modest technical challenge with a sophisticated, wearable accessory.
