Solstice Glow Hat by bunnymuff
What is Being Made
The Solstice Glow is a knitted hat pattern designed by Mona Zillah of bunnymuff. This downloadable PDF knitting pattern creates a finished hat using multiple coordinating yarn colors, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to incorporate colorwork and create a visually striking finished piece.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting pattern suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level. The pattern involves working with multiple yarn colors in a coordinated design, requiring familiarity with color changes and managing multiple strands during the knitting process.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Solstice Glow hat employs several key knitting techniques and stitches:
- Cable Cast On (cable CO) - The pattern uses a cable cast-on method to establish the foundation stitches. This technique involves creating a slip knot on the needle, knitting one stitch, then twisting and replacing stitches to the left needle in a repeated sequence until the desired number of stitches are cast on.
- Knit Stitch (k) - The fundamental knit stitch forms the basis of the fabric construction.
- Knit Through Back Loop (ktbl) - This variation involves knitting stitches through the back loop from the purl direction, creating a twisted stitch effect that adds texture and visual interest to the design.
- Central Double Decrease (cdd) - A decrease technique where two stitches are slipped knitwise as if to knit two stitches together, one stitch is knitted, and the slipped stitches are passed over the knit stitch. This creates a centered decrease useful for shaping.
Yarn and Materials
The Solstice Glow hat is designed to be worked with Shetland 4ply yarn by Gathered Sheep Yarns, which is 100% pure Shetland wool in fingering weight. The pattern uses a main color (MC) and four contrasting colors (CC1, CC2, CC3, and CC4) in the following approximate amounts:
- MC (Spicy Treat) - 7g; 34 yards (31 meters); 1 mini skein
- CC1 (Creepy Pumpkin) - 7g; 34 yards (31 meters); 1 mini skein
- CC2 (Stone) - 19g; 92 yards (84 meters); 1 mini skein
- CC3 (Vampires Blood) - 6g; 29 yards (26.5 meters); 1 mini skein
- CC4 (Ghoulish Cocktail) - 15g; 72 yards (66 meters); 1 mini skein
The yarn weight is specified as 3-ply and 4-ply, with the Shetland 4ply providing approximately 96 yards (87.8 meters) per 20-gram mini skein. Knitters will need appropriate knitting needles suitable for working with fingering-weight yarn and managing multiple colors throughout the project.
