Product Description
Originally designed as part of 3 Kittens Needle Arts' S.O.B. Mystery Box 2021. S.O.B. stands for Spunky Old Broads. But for this scarf S.O.B. could also stand for Scrappy Old Bits, because you can use up lots of bits and pieces of fingering weight yarn in this scarf (as I did in the photographed sample).
The pattern calls for fingering weight yarn: one full-size skein (approx 400 yards) for the MC, and 25gram mini-hanks (approx 100 yards each) of nine contrasting colors. However, you could use less contrasting colors - just keep in mind that you will need 800-1000 total yards for the 72” long scarf.
The chevron pattern (or ripple pattern) is easy to learn. I have added notes on how to modify for a wider scarf or to use less colors. I highly recommend that you learn to weave your ends in as you go. There is a link provided in the pattern to a video tutorial on how to do this.
Please do a gauge swatch! I cannot guarantee you will have enough yarn if you don’t do one.
SOB Scarf by 3 Kittens Needle Arts
What Is Being Made
The SOB Scarf, designed by Laura Rasmussen, is a unisex ripple pattern scarf measuring approximately 7.5 inches wide by 72 inches long. This generous length allows the finished scarf to wrap multiple times around the neck, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various styling preferences and body types.
Design and Pattern Structure
The scarf features a distinctive ripple stitch pattern created through strategic increases and decreases that form undulating waves throughout the fabric. The color striping is based on the Fibonacci Sequence, a mathematical pattern that creates visually appealing color progressions. The design uses one main color paired with nine contrast colors, each weighing 25 grams, allowing crafters to explore creative color combinations and experimentation.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level project employs several fundamental knitting techniques:
- Garter stitch – worked by knitting every row, which prevents the scarf edges from rolling and creates a textured, reversible fabric
- Increases – using the kfb (knit in front and back) technique to add stitches and create the ripple effect
- Decreases – employing ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2togtbl (knit two stitches together through back loop) methods to shape the waves
- Stitch marker placement – using nine ring stitch markers to track pattern repeats and maintain color changes
- Stranded colorwork – managing multiple yarn colors throughout the project
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern utilizes basic knitting abbreviations including CO (cast on), BO (bind off), k (knit), pm (place marker), kfb (knit front and back increase), ssk (slip slip knit decrease), and k2togtbl (knit two together through back loop decrease). The ripple effect is achieved through the strategic placement of these increases and decreases in a repeating sequence.
Materials and Gauge
The SOB Scarf requires 400 yards of fingering weight yarn for the main color, plus 25 grams each of nine contrast colors in fingering weight. The sample was created using Trippin' with Dixi Migration yarn, a premium blend of 60% superwash wool, 20% yak, and 20% silk, providing durability, softness, and a luxurious drape. Crafters will need US 6/4mm needles (or the size needed to obtain proper gauge), nine ring stitch markers, one locking stitch marker, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. The pattern calls for a gauge of 34 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches when worked in pattern and blocked, ensuring the finished scarf achieves the intended dimensions and drape.
