Product Description
This is the third in my series of angel shawls. It is slightly larger than the other 2 designs and yet still uses less than 600m of laceweight mohair yarn. It is light and soft, yet lovely and warm. Why did I call it Snowy Angel? Well the yarn is Debbie Bliss Party Angel in white, the glisten reminded me of sunshine on snow. Similar yarns are Debbie Bliss Angel and Rowan Kidsilk Haze. The finished size is 190cm wide by 90cm deep Written in English and US terminology.
Please note that I crochet mohair yarn quite loosely, so you must check tension/gauge.
Snowy Angel Shawl by Agrarian Artisan
What is Being Made
The Snowy Angel Shawl is an advanced-level crocheted shawl designed by Agrarian Artisan. This is the third design in the designer's angel shawl series. The shawl is worked from the bottom point upwards, creating a triangular or pointed silhouette. Despite being slightly larger than the other two designs in the series, it remains an efficient project, using less than 600 meters of laceweight yarn while delivering a garment that is light, soft, and warm.
Techniques Used
This crochet shawl employs foundational techniques suitable for advanced crocheters. The pattern begins with a foundation chain joined into a ring, establishing the starting point at the shawl's bottom. The design is built upward through successive rows, with stitch markers used to track progress and maintain pattern accuracy. The construction method allows the shawl to expand gradually as rows increase in complexity and size.
Stitches Used
The Snowy Angel Shawl incorporates several fundamental crochet stitches to create its structure and drape:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation chains and spacing throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc) – provides structure and density in specific sections
- Treble stitch (tr) – creates taller stitches that contribute to the shawl's drape and openness
- Slip stitch (ss) – used to join the foundation chain into a ring and to connect rounds
The pattern uses chain spaces (ch sp) to create open, lacy sections that are characteristic of shawl design, allowing the yarn to showcase its delicate qualities while maintaining structural integrity.
Materials
The Snowy Angel Shawl is designed to be worked in laceweight yarn, with the original pattern calling for less than 600 meters of yarn total. The designer used Debbie Bliss Party in white for the sample, chosen for its luminous quality that evokes the appearance of sunlight glinting off snow. The yarn weight is described as light and soft while providing warmth, making it suitable for layering or wearing as a delicate wrap.
Similar yarn alternatives recommended by the designer include Debbie Bliss Angel and Rowan Kidsilk Haze, both of which offer comparable laceweight characteristics and drape. Standard crochet hooks appropriate for laceweight yarn are required, though the specific hook size should be verified in the complete pattern instructions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced crocheters who are comfortable working with delicate laceweight yarns, reading complex stitch patterns, and managing multiple stitch types and spacing requirements. The upward construction method and use of chain spaces require attention to detail and pattern comprehension.
