Product Description
These little Winter mittens, featuring Robins in the snow, can be knitted up in an evening or two by a confident beginner/intermediate knitter. They are knitted flat, on single point needles, with a stitched side seam. The 'redbreast' is knitted separately & the mittens are finished with simple embroidered feet & beak and stitched on felt eyes.
The pattern is in four sizes, to suit all ages, with the baby size being thumbless.
Measurements for the four sizes are given in the pattern but can be altered as required by adding extra rows or using a different sized needle.
I have made my mittens in DK washable anti-tickle 100% wool for extra cosiness, but the pattern is suitable for most DK yarns of choice.
Techniques required for this pattern:- Casting on & off, Knit & Purl stitches, increasing & decreasing, stitching up, simple embroidery.
The pattern is in PDF format, on 5 pages, with row by row instructions.
SNOWROBIN Mittens by LCMknits
What is Being Made
The SNOWROBIN mittens are a charming knitted mitten pattern featuring a robin bird design, available in four graduated sizes to fit babies aged 2-6 years, children aged 7-12 years, teenagers, and adults. Each size includes specific hand circumference and length measurements, ranging from 5 inches around the hand for the smallest size to 7½ inches for the largest size. The mittens combine practical winter wear with decorative bird motifs, making them suitable for both functional use and gift-giving.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create the robin design and mitten structure. The pattern utilizes bobble stitches to add textural detail, which are created by knitting into the front and back of a stitch, turning, purling two stitches, turning again, and knitting two stitches together. Increases are worked using the M1 method, which involves picking up the loop between two stitches and knitting into the back of it to add stitches without creating visible holes. Decreases are accomplished through knit two together (K2tog) reductions. The mittens are constructed in stocking stitch, the fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows, which provides a smooth, classic finish ideal for fitted mittens.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) – The basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric
- Purl (P) – Used in alternating rows to create stocking stitch
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) – A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- M1 (Make 1) – An increase method creating new stitches by picking up the loop between stitches and knitting into the back
- Make Bobble (MB) – A textured stitch created by knitting into the front and back of a stitch, then working decreases to form a raised bobble detail
- Stocking Stitch (St st) – The primary fabric structure alternating knit and purl rows
Materials and Tools
The SNOWROBIN mittens are worked in DK weight yarn using King Cole Merino Blend, a blend suitable for soft, wearable mittens. Yarn quantities range from 25 grams for the smallest size to 45 grams for the largest size. The color palette includes White (001) and Mink (1764) as primary colors, with Scarlet (009) used as an accent for robin details. Tiny oddments of Black (048) and Dune (3296) provide the feet and beak of the robin design. The pattern requires Size 3.5mm (US 4) single point needles and Size 4mm (US 6) single point needles for working different sections. Additional materials include four small white felt circles and four smaller black felt circles for creating the robin's eyes, adding a dimensional, finished detail to the design.
