Product Description
This soft, oversized beret is an ode to the magic of an idealised winter world. Airy colourwork evokes the delicate fall of snowflakes, and a hazy colour palette is reminiscent of the subtle, blue-tinted light that seeps through the windows when snow is banked high outside. In the depths of winter, a little woolly magic can lift even the most snowed-under spirits. I hope this sweet, quick beret is as fun for you to knit as it was for me! Designed especially for those new to Fair Isle knitting (or more experienced knitters looking for a quick and satisfying knit), Snowlight is knit seamlessly from the brim up, and is best worked in a bouncy pure wool yarn.
The sample is shown in Quince & Co. Lark. A suggested subsitute is shown below.
Snowlight Beret by Katie Flora
What Is Being Made
The Snowlight Beret is a knitted hat designed by Katie Flora as an intermediate-level project. This beret features a classic silhouette with a finished circumference of 76cm (30 inches) and a total height from brim to crown tip of 26cm (10.2 inches). The brim itself measures 51cm (20 inches) when lightly stretched, with a brim height of 3cm (1.2 inches). This is a versatile accessory suitable for adding warmth and comfort to any wardrobe.
Techniques Used
The Snowlight Beret incorporates several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques throughout its construction. The pattern begins with a cast-on edge and progresses through ribbing for the brim, which provides elasticity and helps the hat maintain its shape. Increasing techniques are employed to expand the fabric from the brim to the main body of the beret. The pattern features two sections of colourwork, introducing color patterning as a design element. Crown-shaping decreases are used to taper the top of the beret toward the crown tip, creating the characteristic rounded silhouette. The project concludes with finishing techniques to complete the garment.
Stitches Used
While the complete stitch glossary is included within the pattern, the Snowlight Beret employs standard knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate knitter. The pattern utilizes ribbing stitches for the brim section, stockinette stitch for the body, and decreases for shaping the crown. Colourwork techniques are incorporated, allowing knitters to work with multiple colors to create the pattern details shown in the included colourwork charts.
Materials
The Snowlight Beret can be worked in yarn weights ranging from DK to worsted to aran weight, providing flexibility based on desired fabric density and finished appearance. Knitting needles appropriate to the chosen yarn weight are required. The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 23 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch, which should be checked before beginning to ensure proper fit.
Pattern Structure
The downloadable PDF pattern is organized into eight chapters covering all aspects of the project: preparation and materials, casting on, ribbing, increasing, two colourwork sections, crown-shaping decreases, and finishing. The pattern includes a stitches and abbreviations glossary, detailed colourwork charts for the two color sections, and colourwork tips to guide knitters through the patterned sections. Designer information is also provided.
