Snowflake Pillow #1 Pattern C-126 by OriginalsbyTerry
Project Overview
This is an advanced crochet pattern for creating a decorative snowflake pillow. The design features intricate snowflake motifs worked in crochet, making it an ideal project for experienced crafters looking to add a seasonal or year-round decorative accent to their home.
What Is Being Made
The Snowflake Pillow #1 is a crochet pillow featuring snowflake design elements. The pattern includes detailed instructions for constructing the pillow cover with dimensional snowflake arms and structured shaping that creates visual interest and texture.
Craft and Techniques
This pattern is designed for the crochet craft and is classified as an advanced difficulty project. The design incorporates several specialized techniques developed by the designer to achieve professional-quality results.
Key techniques featured in this pattern include:
- Pull Up (PU): A custom technique created for this snowflake pillow design that allows for less conspicuous joinings. This method involves leaving the hook in the loop, holding the work, and pulling the loop until the yarn is tight in the indicated stitch, creating seamless transitions between sections.
- Chain Join (CJ): A joining method that involves inserting the hook through one loop at the tip of the indicated snowflake arm, yarning over, and pulling yarn through both loops on the hook. This technique is essential for connecting snowflake arms with minimal visible seams.
- Decrease Stitches: The pattern employs both Single Crochet Decrease (SD) and Double Crochet Decrease (DD) techniques to shape the pillow and create structured edges.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches combined with specialty decreases:
- Single Crochet (SC)
- Double Crochet (DC)
- Chain Stitch (ch)
- Slip Stitch (sl st)
- Single Crochet Decrease (SD)
- Double Crochet Decrease (DD)
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed to work with Aran or Worsted weight yarn, both of which are medium-weight yarns suitable for creating fabric with good stitch definition. These yarn weights allow the snowflake details to be clearly visible while maintaining structural integrity in the finished pillow.
You will need a crochet hook appropriate for your chosen yarn weight (typically size H/8 (5mm) to I/9 (5.5mm) for worsted or Aran weight yarns, though specific hook size should be confirmed in the complete pattern instructions). The pattern instructions reference working in rounds with chain spaces and double crochet stitches, indicating the pillow is constructed in a circular or modular fashion.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized in rounds, with detailed stitch-by-stitch instructions. Round 8 instructions demonstrate the characteristic snowflake construction, featuring repeated chain spaces and double crochet groups that create the dimensional snowflake arms. The use of chain-1 spaces between stitches adds openwork elements that enhance the snowflake aesthetic.
