Product Description

These are festive handwarmers that are perfect for the winter season and have beautiful snowflake fair isle detail. There is simple ribbing around the wrists, knuckles, and thumb hole.

This is a great fairisle beginner project with the simple fair isle chart worked for only around the knuckles with no more than two different colours worked per round.

The handwarmers are knit in the round with 3mm (2.5US) double pointed needles. The pattern includes instructions for two sizes, with blocked measurements around the knuckles of 7” (18cm) and 9” (23cm).

The sample is knit with Drops Alpaca (sport weight; 100% alpaca), 50 grams/167meters (183 yards), in:

1 ball of Maroon Mix (3650)

1 ball of Light Grey (0501)

There are endless potential great colour combinations and other types of yarn that would suite this pattern!

The pattern includes a chart for the fair isle section of the handwarmer.

Hope you enjoy the pattern! Happy knitting!

Snowflake Handwarmers by MunroSisters3

What is Being Made

The Snowflake Handwarmers are a pair of knitted fingerless gloves or mittens designed by Fiona Munro from the independent designer label MunroSisters3. These handwarmers feature a decorative snowflake pattern and are available in two sizes: Small with a 7" circumference around the knuckles, and Medium with a 9" circumference. The finished pieces provide warmth while keeping fingers free for dexterity and movement.

Techniques Used

This project employs Fair Isle knitting, a traditional colorwork technique that creates intricate patterned designs by carrying two colors across rows and working them into the fabric. The Snowflake Handwarmers use Fair Isle to produce a snowflake motif that repeats throughout the piece. The garment is constructed in the round using circular or double-pointed needles, which creates a seamless tube structure ideal for handwarmers. This method eliminates the need for seaming and ensures a smooth, professional finish.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric base for the handwarmers. The stockinette stitch provides an ideal canvas for the Fair Isle colorwork pattern. The Fair Isle Chart, referenced on page 4 of the pattern, contains 12-stitch repeats that are worked 4 times across each row, building the snowflake design row by row as you progress up the handwarmer.

Materials

The Snowflake Handwarmers are crafted using Drops Alpaca yarn, a luxurious 100% alpaca fiber in 4-ply weight. The pattern calls for two colorways: 1 ball of Maroon Mix (color code 3650) and 1 ball of Light Grey (color code 0501). Each ball contains 50 grams and yields 167 meters (183 yards) of yarn, providing ample yardage for completing both handwarmers. Knitting is worked on 3.00mm (US 2.5) double-pointed needles or whatever needle size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge of 24 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Additional materials include a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some prior experience. The combination of Fair Isle colorwork and in-the-round knitting requires familiarity with managing multiple colors and working with double-pointed needles, though the straightforward stockinette base and clear pattern structure make it accessible to those ready to expand their skills beyond basic knitting projects.
